Without a strong army a nation that is surrounded by nomadic tribes that are ambitious to conquer them are doomed. The Roman army wasn’t at all strong because according to Montanelli (D5) their army was composed by foreigners, these German mercenaries were unskilled and felt little or no loyalty towards the Emperor. Also, according to Strayer, Gatzke, and Harbison (D1) an overwhelming majority of the Roman population believed the old civilization wasn’t worth saving. Therefore, they didn’t have the desire to protect the nation and serve in the army. A country’s military directly influences the welfare of its nation; this is why the Roman Army’s incompetence led them to their…

Though this would be the primary dominate force on the battlefield, Rome actually lost battles because they were primarily heavy infantry. Roman soldiers adopted fighting tactics of other forces and enemies to become the most elite force on the battle field. Starting out, soldiers fought like the Greek worriers known as hoplites. Hoplites were essentially an infantry man armed with a shield and spear, which were on reserve until called to battle. The tactics that were adopted from the Hoplites was a formation called the Phalanx. This formation consisted of soldiers lining up shoulder to shoulder with their weapon in one hand and shield in the opposite. Not only did this help with shields protecting one another, it made lines impenetrable for arrows, spears and enemy as long as they maintained a solid line side by side.2…

Legionaries carried small javelins called pilum and would throw them en masse as the formations got close to each other. The tips were made of a soft metal, with the rest of it being made of wood that was designed to bend after impact so as to render it useless and would not allow the enemy to throw them back. These javelins would often impact enemy shields and embed themselves into them rendering the shield useless due to the heavy, awkward weight of the javelin sticking out, striping the enemy of some their protection. Closer in the Romans relied on a short, very well tapered, stabbing sword to attack their enemies with called a gladius. Legionnaires were also equipped with a small dagger but this is more for use outside of combat but could probably be used as a last resort if the need…

Between 600 BCE and 600 CE, many empires throughout the world rose to power as a result of powerful military organizations that allowed them to defend themselves and conquer new land. Forceful armies were especially important in both Rome and Greece, where their dynamic military permitted them to dominate and expand their territories, thus increasing their empire’s power and influence. Most notably in the Roman Empire, the strong martial force led the state to victory in several battles, including the Battle of Zama. The empire’s powerful military obliterated Carthage and led to Rome subsequently taking control of the area. As a result of winning such battles, Rome took control of more land and expanded its territory to take over much of Southern…

In document D it says “ The Spartans learned to read and write for purely practical reasons: all other forms of education the banned from the country, books and treatises being included in as much as [foreign teachers].” This is a weakness because there strategies were not strong because they didn’t have the knowledge, they only had the strength. So during battle, they can only fight with strength but, whoever they are battling will have knowledge and strategy. How are we supposed to last long in battle when we are hurt but have no strategy to keep fighting?…

Being an honorable, courageous and bold soldier is regarded as having Roman warlike virtues and following the Roman warrior code. Bret and Kate McKay believed that ‘manliness meant living a life of virtue’ in ancient Rome. Furthermore they explain that virtue refers to having ‘masculine strength’. Volumnia would “rather have eleven [sons] die nobly” than one son enjoy a peaceful life, this shows that fighting in a war was regarded as nobility and superiority, and shows it is more acceptable in Rome to fight in war than to be a noncombatant. Rome is a very violent society – they valued military prowess.…

They expected to easily slice the outnumbered enemy into pieces, but they were unnoticeably channeled into a tight pack (). The Romans had two great advantages on their side, they were much more skilled in the tactics and arts of battle and they also had the position on the defensive. Roman soldiers were accustomed to defending themselves while attacking fortified positions by forming up in a tight phalanx formation, the men positioned shoulder to shoulder, their shields creating one great continuous shield, a mobile walled fortification. Boudicca’s spear throwers, hurling their weapons uphill, were wholly ineffective. The spears that made contact with the Roman force bounced harmlessly off the impenetrable shield barrier.…

Because of this the Roman Fighters were prone to more wounds because of the lack of protective equipment.
