The history of the fire service has been very interesting and informative. I hope that after this essay that you will farther understand the history behind the service of fire fighting. The activity of fire fighting can be dated back to Ancient Rome 6AD. Rome was the first to have a paid fire brigade of seven thousand fire fighters. The fire brigades would also patrol the streets in order to check for fire code violations, when not responding to fire calls. In Rome around the time of the second century the idea for the first water shooter pump was lost, but luckily rebuilt in the year 1500 AD. Every member of a bucket brigade would have to have their own bucket with their name on it. The brigade would consist of two lines, one that would hand full buckets of water down, the next line would pass the empty buckets to have them refilled.
In the town of Boston, Massachusetts in 1603, a movement to attempt the prevention of fire was started. Fire prevention was guidelines that were set in place in order to prevent the outbreak of fires and also control the fire from spreading. In New York City, in 1648 Peter Stuyvesant, who was the Governor at the time placed fire inspectors in action, to inspect for fire code violations. Unfortunately these actions did not change much of the fire activity taking place, because many houses still burned to the ground.
