Rome. One of the most well known places in the ancient world. The culture was best known for their gladiators and their marvellous architecture.
There is a part of the culture is touched upon but is never delved into with much detail.
These were people that served their masters but were not thoroughly acknowledged.
Here is a look at a brief outlook on the lives of slaves. The outlook will also show what some of their functionality were within Roman society.
Who Had Slaves and Who They Were

More than one-third of Rome’s population were slaves of all different coloured skin.
Some masters abused their slaves in any way they believe was just and beneficial.
Many masters used their slaves sexually. These masters had many of their slaves instilled in local brothels. Other masters had their slaves produce their own children. They did this in to give the household more slaves without having to buy them.
The popular choice for slaves who didn’t want to be apart of a household was to run away. Running away was common for slaves. Many slave traders had to disclose whether a certain slave had run away before.
Escape became more difficult for the slaves to escape their masters. Their escapes were often because of their masters’ constant abuse. Many slaves planned their escapes ahead of time. They would often have a ‘magical’ amulet that would hide them in total ‘darkness’. It was said that it would hide them away from their masters.
At some point in the fourth century AD, masters had to be humane when it came to their slaves. This is why they were forced in have their slaves wear metal collars that were permanent. These collars would have the master’s name etched into the
