The Dark Romanticism era is primarily characterized by the 19th century literary movement. It is popularly known as a 2th gender of the larger Romanticism Movement. This is because it retains, and exposes several of the characteristics associated with it such as transcendentalism, and romanticism. In the 18th century, and early 19th in America the transcendentalism movement started to gain representation. The basic philosophy of the movement was a belief in the human’s spirituals essences and their soul’s ability to transcend into the …show more content…
physical. Consequently, there was a reaction to the transcendentalism, a collection of works concentrating upon themes of horror, tragedies, the macabre and the mystical World. These works, illuminated the ideas of the obscurity in human mind, its affinity towards the unknown, and the dark etc. led to the birth of the dark romanticism.
The Dark Romanticists focused more on human psychology, and the complexities of human behavior.
They still referred to nature, but sometimes in a dark, and a bit scary way. Gothic elements of the supernatural as manifestations of truth and human conscience were also common in the writings of the Dark Romanticists.
The Dark Romantics people are much less confident about the notion perfection is an innate quality of mankind, as believed by Transcendentalists. Subsequently, Dark Romantics present individuals as prone to sin and self-destruction, not as inherently possessing divinity and wisdom Mr. Thompson describes this disagreement, stating while Transcendental thought conceived of the world in which divinity was imminent, the Dark Romantics adapted images of anthropomorphized evil in the form of Satan, devils, ghosts … vampires, and ghouls.
In addition, both groups believed that nature is a deeply spiritual force, and that Dark Romanticism views it in a much more sinister light than does Transcendentalism, which sees nature as a divine and universal. For these Dark Romantics, the natural world is dark, decaying, and mysterious when it does reveal truth to the man kind, its revelations are evil and hell. Finally, where Transcendentalism advocates social reform when is appropriate, works of Dark Romanticism frequently shown individuals failing in their attempts to make changes for the

Edgar Allan Poe was a very famous Dark Romanticist writer. His works contained, (still do) the best quality elements of Dark Romanticism. For example, is short story “The Tell-Tale Heart” shows the supernatural as a manifestation of the protagonists conscience. There is a lot of emphasis on the mind, and thought processes. Poe uses the supernatural in such a way that it is only a result of the protagonists mentality. The protagonist sees and hears what he is thinking. That is why in “The Tell-Tale Heart”, nobody except the protagonist can hear the beating of the murdered man’s heart. The beating heart is a manifestation of the protagonist guilty conscience. “The Raven” which is a poem involves a ghostly element of the supernatural, and mystical World (Giordano, n.d.)
Transcendentalism and Dark Romanticism are just two of the many genders of the American Romantic Movement that appeared around 1820 to 1860. Common to all these genres was a great importance to nature and man’s relationship with it. Various authors chose different aspects of nature to relate to the human physic. Romanticism rebelled against Puritans and gave the necessary importance to learn about spirituality rather than religion. The American Romantic period encouraged the American dream of their own efforts and lastly includes their expression towards the world.
