Sparta was located on a Peloponnesian peninsula, in a land locked valley. This society was based on conquest, which meant discipline and subordination where demanded. These people emphasized physical perfection; no one was to be weak and lazy, which helped their army in the long run. Having strong men equals a strong army no doubt, but they had to do something with that strength. They invented many tactical strategies of defense, making them strong and smart army. And they got to show it off in the Peloponnesian wars and the Persian wars.
Rome took a different approach to solving their problems. The Romans where strong diplomats and rather than use swords they use words. Still when it came to holding on to what was theirs they had no problem fighting. Over all Romans did good to the places they conquered, they were allowed to keep their culture and beliefs, all they had to do was pay taxes and supply soldiers. The Romans didn’t want their kindness to be mistaken, so whenever it came to war the tables would turn. They assembled into numbers in the thousands and wreaked havoc. An example would be the Punic wars, Rome got angry and Carthage paid. Both of these societies were trade marks in the developments of future military.
