Romeo and Juliet

In the Tragedy of Romeo and Juliet, many people contributed to their deaths, but one man is most responsible. The father of Juliet played a huge role in the decision she took in killing herself. Capulet is guilty for the deaths of Romeo and Juliet because he wasn’t accepting and because he allowed Romeo to stay at the party. Capulet is responsible for Romeo and Juliet’s deaths because he wasn’t accepting of the fact that Montagues and Capulets could get along. Capulet states, “My sword, I say! Old Montague is come and flourished his blade in spite of me” (I.i.68-69). This quote shows that he isn’t going to forgive the Montagues any time soon. This also demonstrates that Capulet will try to fight the Montagues any chance he gets. By saying, “But Montague is bound as well as I, in penalty alike; and ‘tis not heard, I think, for men so old as we to keep the peace,” (I.ii.1-4) Capulet means that he is trying to keep the peace by separating the Capulets and Montagues. Maybe in his own way he was trying to save his daughter by keeping her away from the Montagues, but he could have attempted to relieve the tension between the two families. This is one reason Capulet is responsible for the tragedy. Allowing Romeo to stay at the party was Capulets fault. Capulet proclaimed, “Content thee, gentle coz, let him alone” (I.v.64). This shows Capulet telling Tybalt to ignore Romeo. Even though Tybalt despised the idea of letting Romeo stay, he had to listen to his uncle. Capulet declared, “He shall be endured. What goodman boy! I say he shall” (I.v.75-76). This shoes that Capulet is responsible for Romeo seeing Juliet in the first place. If Capulet let Tybalt throw him out of the party, Romeo would have never even seen Juliet. This is important because if Romeo never talked to her, she probably wouldn’t have asked the nurse for his name, and more importantly, never have fallen in love with him. All in all, the fact that Capulet held a grudge against the Montagues showed that he wasn’t willing to ever let Juliet marry Romeo. It is obvious that because Capulet let Romeo stay at the party, that directly changed the events of that night. Above anyone else who contributed to the downfall of Juliet and Romeo, Capulet is most liable.
