In the play Romeo and Juliet written by Shakespeare, Romeo’s family (the Montegues) and Juliet’s family (the Capulets) do not get along and have a big rivalry. Because of this ongoing rivalry between their two families, the biggest challenge they face is being together. Firstly, Friar Laurence helps Juliet find a way around an issue. Juliet pursues Friar Laurence’s plan to avoid marrying Paris and to be with Romeo. “I will do it without fear
or doubt. To live an unstained wife to my sweet love” (Shakespeare 88-89). Friar Laurence’s plan ends up failing which causes the suicides of Romeo and Juliet at the end of the play. After hearing about Juliet’s death from Balthasar, Romeo decides that he is going to kill himself at Juliet’s tomb by drinking poison. “Well, Juliet, I shall lie with thee tonight” (Shakespear 34). Juliet is still “dead” when Romeo arrives at her tomb. Romeo then drinks the poison and is left dead by Juliet’s tomb. Juliet eventually wakes up and finds romeo dead. She then picks up Romeo’s dagger, and stabs herself to death so she can be with Romeo. Both Romeo and Juliet can not overcome the challenge of being without one another, so Romeo kills himself when he hears that Juliet is dead, and Juliet kills herself when she sees that Romeo is dead. In conclusion, Romeo and Juliet overcome their issue of being without one another negatively by ending each of their lives so they can somehow be together after death.
In the book The Secret Life of Bees, the characters specifically Lily and May overcome their challenges very similarly to Romeo and Juliet. At the beginning of the book, Lily lives with her abusive, mean father T-ray and their maid/nanny named Rosaline. After years and years of T-ray’s abuse, Lily decides to run away and brings Rosaline with her since they have a bond. Lily’s action compares to the play Romeo and Juliet because, Friar Laurence’s plan is to have Romeo and Juliet run away and be together once Juliet wakes up from her sleeping potion. Overall, Lily’s way of overcoming T-ray’s abuse is to run away from home. After miles of walking and living on the streets, Lily and Rosaline find a place to stay with three sisters that live together. One is named August, one is named May, and the third one is named June. May is the most sensitive sister and has a special way of dealing with her challenges, mostly her emotions. Whenever May is upset about something, she goes out to the wailing wall and she writes what is making her upset on a piece of paper and then slips it in between the stones. Soon after her close friend Sam is arrested, May reaches her breaking point and deals with her challenges in a darker way, She drowns herself. May along with Romeo and Juliet took a very similar, negative approach to facing challenges. They all decided to end their life.
In conclusion, a lot of people especially young people, make negative and bad decisions when it comes to facing challenges. Romeo, Juliet, May, and Lily all deal with challenges in similar ways by running away, finding a way around the challenge, or killing themselves.
