Juliet’s submissive and respectful behaviour is clearly evident in Scene 1 Act 3 when Lady Capulet, Juliet’s mother, brought up the topic of her marriage with Paris. Juliet not only did not object to her mother’s decision, she respected her mother’s decision and gladly accepted and agreed to the marriage when she said, “it is an honour that I not dream of”. Juliet seeing Lady Capulet’s suggests that Juliet does not wish to disobey her mother’s wishes for her, let alone fight for her future and choices. Also the topic and decision might be slightly foreign and a shock to Juliet. As she said “that I not dream of” suggests she had never expected her mother to bring to bring up this topic so she did not have time to react. I feel that Juliet is forced to be submissive and obedient. Lady Capulet asks Juliet in a way in which Juliet cannot reject nor object to her decisions. It seems that Lady Capulet is almost forcing it on Juliet, leaving her with no choice but to agree.
Juliet’s lack of mind of her own towards love is evident in Scene 1 Act 3. Juliet agrees to her mother’s suggestion and recommendation without thinking twice especially when it affects her future who she spends the rest of her life with. Although she does not know how or what Count Paris character is, she agreed, trusting her mother’s honeyed and the ignorant Nurse’s words of “he’s a man of wax” which means he is an ideal and a perfect man and her reply of “I’ll look to like if looking liking more.” This suggests that she does not bother about love let alone pursue her own happiness. She only cares about the feelings of her mother and not her own feelings. I feel that Juliet lacks her own opinion when it comes to the matters of heart. She thinks too
