This is simply a suggested structure. Remember to use the PEE structure in each paragraph. Use the title to focus your essay.

Introduction

How important a theme is conflict to the play?
Where else in the play have we seen conflict?
Link these ideas to how conflict is presented in Act 3 Scene 1.

Paragraph one
Irony- before this scene R&j marry. The Friar hopes this will reunite the two families!
Pathetic fallacy- repetition of words to do with heat- something is going to happen, tempers will be lost!
Warnings about the Capulets.
Mercutio tells of all the fights Benvolio has been in- words to do with conflict- foreshadows (predicts) the future fight.
Structure of a tragedy- this is the mid-way point.

Paragraph Two
Tybalt’s entrance- highly dramatic. Think about what we know of Tybalt’s character.
Tybalt uses false politeness- looking for Romeo- tension, fight will ensue.
Tybalt and Mercutio fight with their words.
Does Mercutio draw his sword? How would the audience react?
How does Benvolio take control of conflict? (lines 49-52)
Are there any issues raised regarding a public/private conflict? (Lines 49-54).

Paragraph three
Romeo’s entrance- dramatic tension, effect on audience.
How does Tybalt’s aggressive language imply that he seeks conflict with Romeo?
Discuss how Romeo’s language implies that he wants to avoid conflict.
Consider Mercutio’s insults and how he creates verbal conflict (lines 72-74, 76-81).
Consider stage directions- who draws their sword first? Consider the effect on the audience.

Paragraph Four
Comment on the irony of Romeo’s e.g. ‘Draw’ and ‘Beat’.
Comment on Mercutio’s repetition of ‘A plague o’both your houses’ (clue: think about the ending of the play and the significance of the word ‘both’).
Is Romeo to blame for Mercutio’s death
Imagery evoked by Mercutio’s language (link to Tybalt being ‘King of Cats’, puns) (105-7).
Look at the effect of Romeo’s love for Juliet on his view of the conflict (lines 109-115).
Think if the report that Mercutio is dead and look at the language used by Romeo which suggests that tragedy has begun.

Paragraph Five

What is Tybalt’s mood as he returns to the scene? What would the audience be expecting?
How have Romeo’s opinions of the conflict changed? (look at his language, including the metaphors he uses to describe death lines 122-129).
How do Benvolio’s lines (131-135) create dramatic tension?
Look at Romeo’s reaction to Tybalt’s death and his exit.

Paragraph Six
Consider the stage directions
Enter Citizens
Look at the language of conflict (synonyms for fight).
Study Benvolio’s bias account of conflict; focus on the language he uses to refer to the other characters.
Discuss the consequences of conflict.

The play ‘Romeo & Juliet’ in itself could be considered as a connotation of conflict, showing not only the general day to day disputes, but the intense and aggressive types of conflict that we can be faced with. For example, the prologue of ‘Romeo & Juliet’ talks of the conflict as an ‘ancient grudge’ from which comes ‘new mutiny’, immediately delivering a sense of foreboding to the audience. The way in which William Shakespeare has decided to portray the conflict right from the beginning of the play could arguably be to symbolise the inescapability of conflict, almost as though a higher power is controlling the happenings of our two title characters lives.…

I do not think that the love between Romeo and Juliet will last because Romeo was supposedly in love with Rosaline the same day that he fell in love with Juliet. The Friar says in Act 2, Scene 3 “God pardon sin! Wast thou with Rosaline?” and then Romeo says that he has already forgot about Rosaline “With Rosaline, my ghostly Father? No. I have forgot that name and that name’s woe.” If Romeo forgets Rosaline that fast wont he just forget Juliet for the next girl he sees.…

iRomeo and Juliet were written by William Shakespeare. The play is about two star crossed lovers who are born into two different families who have an ancient grudge. This leads to both Romeo and Juliet’s deaths. The play has strong violence and conflict involved in it. Shakespeare uses different types of conflict throughout the play. The Prologue shows that there will be conflict in the play when it mentions, ‘From ancient grudge... Where civil blood makes civil hands unclean.’ The word Civil makes me think that people who are not involved in the grudge still suffer pain. This gives you a quick impression of what the play is going to be about.…

Conflicts make the world go around, but when is conflict reaching the point where family relationships are affected? In Shakespeare’s The Tragedy of Romeo and Juliet, both the Montague and Capulet families experience conflicts that in return, leave long lasting effects on their families. While many people may argue that the feuding between the families in the play cannot be used as a relative argument, Shakespeare uses this to prove that conflicts often do not need to be taken to extremes. When conflicts are taken to these extremes, family relationships are often times injured in the process of resolving the issue. Not only does this appear many places in the past, the same problem of conflicts reaching extremes still happens, and happens quite often, in the modern world. In many cases, parents and children have different views on these conflicts, which causes their…

In William Shakespeare’s play ‘Romeo and Juliet’ there is alot of conflict particularly in act 3 scene 1. The audience find conflict interesting to watch because it creates drama and tension. Shakespeare uses many dramatic devices to present this; some of these techniques include foreshadowing, puns and irony to add to this effect. Another reason why Shakespeare uses conflict in the play is so that the audience are able to get attached to it and watch the conflict grow. The fact that the scene is set in a public place encourages the characters to show off, the characters do this because they want to show their strength and show people that they are not afraid. The conflict in the play was created by a family ‘feud’, the families included Montague and Capulet. Ever since the feud the families have been fighting ever since, however the conflict later on heightens because ‘star-crossed lovers’ Romeo Capulet and Juliet Montague marry, but this later on turns into a tragedy.…

One of the primary ways Mercutio demonstrates himself as a colorful character is through his vivid use of figurative language. In Mercutio’s famous Queen Mab Speech he uses creative and unexpected imagery as he describes “Her wagon spokes made of long spinners’ legs, The cover of wings of grasshoppers, Her traces of the smallest spider web, Her collars of the moonshine’s wat’ry beams, Her whip of cricket’s bone” (Act I Scene IV 64-68). Another example of Mercutio’s clever tongue is seen in his puns, which is also a characteristic of a colorful character. Before the Capulet party, Romeo and Mercutio are discussing the dreams they had the previous night. Mercutio sums up his view of dreamers and dreams in one brilliant pun: “That dreamers often lie” (Act I Scene IV 56). In this statement, Mercutio is playing off of the double meaning of the word “lie”. The word lie in this context can be interpreted as in lying down, or as in saying something dishonest. A colorful character also has the unique skill to make a statement interesting through the double meaning of words. This consistent us of clever language is a key aspect of the role he plays…
