Make or Break
Parents or parental figures play a big role in every child’s life. They can be good role models and set good examples for their children, or be awful ones and set bad examples. It is the “make or break” part in every child’s life. In the tragedy The Most Excellent and Lamentable Tragedy of Romeo and Juliet by Shakespeare, Friar Lawrence and the Nurse serve as parental figures that greatly impact the development of Romeo and Juliet respectively.
The relationship between Romeo and Friar Lawrence affects the development of Romeo by making Romeo more distant from his family and friends and by giving him the courage to go see Juliet after he murdered her cousin. Friar Lawrence made Romeo more distant from his family by allowing him to marry Juliet. In the text Friar Lawrence says, “In one respect I’ll thy assistant be, / For this alliance may so happy prove/ To turn your households’s rancor to pure love,” (Shakespeare. II. iii. 97-99). Because Friar Lawrence permitted Romeo to marry every Montague’s greatest enemy, Romeo had to keep a dark secret in which he had to hide from his family. Keeping such a big secret makes Romeo become more distant from his family because it proves he is not trustworthy to them. Also, marrying a family enemy would put Romeo in the neutral side of the Montague-Capulet feud. Romeo would have a Capulet wife, Montague parents, and a lot of decisions to make. This would make Romeo grow distant from his own family because his loyalties would be split between the feuding families instead of solely to his own. Because Friar Lawrence allowed Romeo to marry Juliet, he made Romeo grow distant from his family. Friar Lawrence also affected the development of Romeo by making him more optimistic and courageous after he murdered Tybalt, giving him the courage to see Juliet again.
