Romeo and Juliet’s fate was completely out of their control.
Regardless of any free willing choices made they could not have changed their destined fate. They were to be apart before they ever met due to their families’ feud. Being together would have been the most difficult obstacle to overcome for even the most devoted lovers. Regardless of their effort put into their relationship there was always something keeping them apart throughout the story. It was fate, not bad luck! Romeo and Juliet were star crossed lovers (Jamieson). Star crossed lovers is a phrase used to describe a relationship doomed to fail. Showing from the beginning things would never
work. Fate affects your everyday life. What you have planned today fate may interrupt tomorrow. Although we do not determine the result, we do play a role in it. We can make choices that go against our predestined fate but fate always overthrows free will. Juliet’s parents decided her fate when she was told to marry the prince. (page 815, Act 1, line 2- 37) In dispute she made a free-willing choice to run away with Romeo to get married. In response to her decision fate overpowered their love and caused more altercations between the feuding families to keep them apart. You can not fight fate, it is to powerful. Thy fate is the common fate of all into each life some rain must fall (longfellow). Fate always lets things turn out how they should be. Romeo and Juliet’s deaths are the result of fate well disguised as chance. Whether or not fate shapes who we are, the danger of believing that it can transcend all obstacles comes at great personal and social cost (Stoppard). There is nothing that can be done to change your fate.
