The original play by Shakespeare and Zeffirelli and Luhrmann’s interpretation of the play are all different versions of the classical tragic story of Romeo and Juliet. When reading the play or seeing Zeffirelli and Luhrmann’s film we can observe various differences between them. Juliet, being one of the dominating characters of this story can be seen to be recontextualised differently through her personality, looks and role in society.…

Juliet’s attitude toward love and marriage changes drastically throughout Romeo and Juliet by going from not wanting love and marriage at all, to loving Romeo and wanting to marry him, and then doing anything to be with him no matter how much it hurts other people. In the beginning, Juliet doesn’t actually want to marry Paris but will do it if her mother wishes her to as she shows by saying “it is an honor that I dream not of” while Lady Capulet is talking to her about marriage. Later in the story, Juliet shows love for Romeo and wants to marry him and Romeo feels the same. By the end of the story, Juliet will do anything for Romeo’s love and to be with him as she shows by saying “this is thy sheath. There rust and let me die,” and she commits…

When Nurse tells Juliet who Romeo is, Juliet says, "My only love sprung from my only hate! Too early seen unknown, and known too late! Prodigious birth of love it is to me that I must love a loathèd enemy" (61). When Romeo sees Juliet on the balcony later that night, or possibly the next morning, he says, "It is my lady. O, it is my love" (69). In real life, two mature people don't know for sure that they've fallen in love after talking for just a few minutes. Their immaturity is shown in these quotes because they think they are in love before they have spent any time together. Perhaps Romeo thinks he loves Juliet because she is the first girl he has approached who seems to like him back. Maybe he just likes her because of her beauty. Either way, if he were mature, he would not think he felt love for her so soon after first laying his eyes upon her. Juliet could think she loves Romeo because she is so used to being kept in her house and has not been exposed to many young men. This most likely causes her to think, since he could be the first boy who has directly flirted with her, that she loves him. Juliet is very immature in suggesting marriage to Romeo, not only because she is a girl, but also because she hasn't introduced him to her parents and because she doesn't know…

As we enter the Capulet’s orchid in Scene 3, we hear Juliet grow restless as she waits for the night. In the beginning of Scene 2, Juliet grows restless. She voices an eloquent soliloquy on her apprehensiveness as the night approached, expressing, “…night before some festival… [when] an impatient child that hath new robes, and may not wear them” (III. ii. 29-31) She uses a metaphor expressing how restless she grows, as she compares herself to an impatient child that has new clothes, and cannot wear them. The figurative language also reveals how she is exhilarated for the night to be with Romeo. Following her well-written soliloquy,…

Younger than you,/ Here in Verona, ladies of esteem,/ Are made already mothers. By my count,/ I was your mother much upon these years/ That you are now a maid. Thus then in brief:/ The valiant Paris seeks you for his love” (I.iii.73-78``). This quote is leading up to Capulet and Lady Capulet pushing Paris on Juliet and telling her that it is time to get married. When Paris and marriage are in the same sentence, you know that they are trying to start something. Juliet is not in love with Romeo. This quote shows a man that is well above her age being forced on her that she hasn’t even met or has made an emotional connection with yet. Juliet is also very emotional but not as emotional as Romeo is. Juliet is just in love with having a choice in men, not with Romeo. There was nothing special about Romeo. He was just a boy that she liked and didn’t waste any time getting to know him before they got married. Then again, Juliet probably didn’t know any better and getting married sooner than later was justifiably okay for the time period that the play takes place in. The play Romeo and Juliet takes place around…

Maturity is defined as one’s journey to being fully developed; full-grown. William Shakespeare knows that as he inquired the growth of Romeo Montague through his famous playwright Romeo and Juliet. Although the story takes place over the short course of four days, Shakespeare writes a story within a story. One that takes more time to evaluate. Romeo matures more because he comes to terms with what real love is, and he sacrifices everything.…

I think Shakespeare is trying to teach us a lot of things about love. Also, how Juliet and Romeo are growing up and how they change throughout the play. I’m going to focus on Juliet and how she comes of age anywhere from her language to the dissuasions she makes. lets start with keeping Romeo a secret from her parents and also not telling her parents that Romeo killed Tybalt, thats changing from before she met Romeo she was this little innocent girl who didn't disrespect anyone now she hiding Romeo from her parents, thats just one thing she did. The wedding of Romeo and Juliet was very secret the only person who knew was Friar Laurence.…

This show us that Romeo was not as responsible or mature enough to handle the consequences of the actions he took like marriage for example. In the 1500s when the play was written it was legal for girls to get married and 12 and boys at the age of 14. However, it was recommended that girls get married at 18 and boys at 22. Romeo and Juliet’s marriage was not something bad although it was rare. Shakespeare really exaggerates the words in Romeo’s line to really emphasise how he is overreacting and not handling this like a mature MARRIED person would.…

When a person becomes a parent, their ultimate goal in life is to protect and provide for their child. Juliet had the ideal childhood environment; her parents sheltered her from the negative of the world and provided her with the best in life. Yet sometimes parents’ best intentions are not suitable for their child. Juliet’s view of marriage at the beginning was naïve, “It is an [honor] that I dream not of” (1.3.71). The thought of marriage…

    Romeo and Juliet Maturity

Firstly, Juliet expresses her maturity by respecting her elders and accepting their wishes. Juliet obediently agrees with her mother of accepting Paris’ love and marriage proposal without hesitation, even though she seemed to not be too fond of the idea, stating that she will “look to like, if looking liking move. /But no more deep will I endart mine eye/ than your consent gives strength to make it fly” (1.4.50-51). This shows that even though Juliet is just turning fourteen, she is well beyond her years when it comes to respect and maturity. However, once she meets Romeo, her priorities start to become crooked. After knowing Romeo for only a couple of hours, if not minutes, Juliet shows her true age when she finds out who Romeo actually was; saying “ If he be married/my grave is like to be my wedding bed” (1.5.148-149). In stating this, she is saying that she will rather die than marry someone else. Seeing as that they have only known each other for a short period of time, and it seems that Juliet has already fallen in love with Romeo, Juliet shows that she can be immature at times because of her rushing in to love.…

Yet Juliet’s views on marriage contrasts this and show her willingness to get married to the one she loves. This is shown by just one night after meeting Romeo, Juliet herself suggests the idea of marriage in Act 2 Scene 2 (143-144) "If that thy bent of love be honourable, / Thy purpose marriage, send me word tomorrow,”. Here there is no thought of her own independent future…
