After we are born, we receive our own names. Names are chosen not by themselves, but by their family member’s. That is the first gift the baby owns and of course, it is free, but not everybody takes the free gift if they don't like it. Just like me and the girl I had read about in the article, “My Name," by Sandra Cisneros. We both don’t like our names because our names are not English names; indeed, it’s the different culture name.…

Lord and Lady Capulet came out of their chambers wearing some of their best linens. As they dismissed us to the kitchen to prepare the food, I could hear the strict talk between Lord Montague and Lord Capulet. It was the awkward talk of weather, and market trade. Sadly, I didn’t see their faces as we walked into the kitchen.…

Franco Zeffirelli and Baz Luhrmann have both directed a film version of Romeo and Juliet very well, but a movie can not capture everything from the book. So, which movie portrayed the book better? There are aspects of both movies that portray the book better. For example, there could one movie could show the character's personality better than the other one or one movie can show the city of Verona better than the other movie did. Small details of a scene could make a scene in one movie a lot better than on the other. Even the smallest of things like the way the characters are dressed could impact the entire scene. In some scenes, the Baz Luhrmann movie portrayed the book better because of the small details…

Once again the feud between the Capulet and Montague families has disturbed the peace and quiet in Verona. This time we have lost more than just peace we have lost lives. We still don’t know which party is too be blamed but we do have a story. According to witnesses the two groups of staff from each family erupted in fight on Thursday morning. Benvolio, Romeo’s cousin, managed to calm down the fight until Juliet’s cousin, Tybalt, arrived at the scene and thanks to a pass a byer we know what happened. Soon citizens became joining in with the brawl and picking sides. Soon after the heads of the two families’ began to gaze upon this brawl but by god’s grace our fair prince of Verona stopped the fight. The next night there was a party hosted by the Capulet family. Where Juliet was caught kissing an unknown guest in a masquerade we believe this was Romeo as he was an uninvited guest. The only person who seemed to guess it was Romeo was Juliet’s cousin Tybalt. Later that night Romeo returned to the Capulet home to speak to Juliet. We know…

In the great hall of the Capulets, all is a-bustle. The servants work feverishly to make sure all runs smoothly, and set aside some food to make sure they have some enjoyment of the feast as well. But this ball isn’t what it seems, for many secrets lay behind the curtain and around the corner. The Capulet ball, where enemies were brought together, arguments occurred and love was in the air. It’s no surprise that the Montague’s were excluded from this event as the feud between the Capulet’s and Montague’s has been going on for quite some time now. Dancing, music, laughter, and love, there’s nothing like a Capulet party, however, the party wasn’t all fun and games. Three young men were spotted sneaking into this party. At first, no one knew for sure exactly who these men were. I thought to myself, maybe they were Montague’s trying to crash this party and make it a disaster, causing more of a feud between the families. I interviewed Tybalt to get more information on these men. Tybalt response was, “This by his voice should be a Montague” which meant that they were in fact Montague’s, and that he was definitely not happy to see them. “I wanted them to leave” he said “they were never invited in the first place and had no right to be there”. This quickly stirred up as a conundrum in my head, and I wondered why the Montague’s weren’t kicked out. “I was furious when Capulet told me that the Montague’s were welcome to stay. He didn’t want any trouble but I wanted them gone!” stated Tybalt. It seemed as though he wanted to create more conflict between the Montague’s and the Capulet’s, however, Capulet would not allow him to create a big scene.…

I was supposed to be named Rachel. It was a compromise, my mother told me, from what my dad had picked: Raquel. Growing up, I had a friend named Rachel that was nothing like me: soft, composed, and the sweetest smile. As it is hebrew, the name comes from the biblical name meaning “O Beautiful One” or “female sheep”. While this is nice and all, it was much more fitting for my friend. Never could or would I pick the animal the sheep to describe myself.…

    My Name Is Margaret

A name for me represents history. Too many names are lost and/or changed because someone’s past, someone’s culture, someone’s story was “too long” to remember, and that just really makes me dejected. It makes me sad to know that people lost so much, especially their names. Maybe that’s why I take my name so seriously. I know I have difficulty remembering other people’s names sometimes, and I’m working on that. I think names are something we take for granted, like we don’t always feel the weight behind our names. There is so much pain and struggle in the past, so many new names that were “better” than the ones people came with from Africa, Asia, or wherever our ancestors immigrated from. Maya Angelou discusses changing names, when Miss Glory tells her about how Mrs. Cullinan changed her name from Hallelujah to Glory, again because it was too long to remember. She didn’t seem to mind, though. Mrs. Cullinan finally calls Margaret by her real name. It only took the breaking of her prized china. I find it sad that she could only bear to say/…
