Romeo And Juliet Quotes Analysis
In the beginning of the play Romeo is lovesick from Rosaline not loving him back. Romeo's friends and family notice Romeo’s change in behavior. Mercutio does not understand why Romeo would be so affected by a girl, he believes true love is just a dream. Benvolio, on the other hand, is more sympathetic to Romeo and can reason to see why he is so hurt. Benvolio nags Romeo to go to the Masquerade Party to cheer Romeo up. Benvolio tells Romeo that at the Masquerade Party, Rosaline will look like a “crow” compared to the girls there. Yet Romeo claims he is too hurt to attend the party. He says, “I am too sore enpierced with his shaft”(I, IV, 20). What Romeo meant by this was, Cupid has stabbed him because Rosaline doesn’t love him. This quote also

    In William Shakespeare’s tragic play Romeo and Juliet, the son and daughter of rival families fall helplessly in love with each other, but a series of catastrophic events lead to the eventual demise of both characters. There is no question that the main character, Romeo, faces a countless number of tragedies throughout the play. The real question is who helps him through these hardships more, Benvolio or Mercutio? Both of these characters are great friends to Romeo in different ways, but if one had to be chosen as Romeo’s best friend it would be Mercutio. Throughout the play, Mercutio cares about the well-being of Romeo, defends Romeo’s honor, and tries to cheer Romeo up through humor. While Benvolio performs a few deeds of friendship, these showings of friendship are not as constant or as outspoken as Mercutio’s showings of friendship.
