Romeo and Juliet sample answer
(a) Did you find the play that you studied to be mainly serious or mainly light-hearted Explain your answer with reference to the play. (15) (b) Which element of the play had the greater impact on you, the serious element or the light-hearted element Clearly explain your choice with reference to the play you have studied. (15) The play I have studied is Romeo and Juliet by William Shakespeare. This play is mostly serious as it describes the tragic story of two young lovers, Romeo and Juliet. At the start of the play we are introduced to the family feud that dominates and influences the characters and their actions. This feud is a key obstacle for the two young lovers as they are from different families, the Montagues and the Capulets. There are very few light hearted moments throughout the text and any of those that exist involve Mercutio, a kinsman of the King. By the end of the play six characters have died, many of them needlessly. Mercutio and Paris, two kinsmen of the King needlessly die even though they are not directly involved in the feud. The way the story unravels is also highly tragic as the deaths and downfall of the various characters could have been avoided and were all a consequence of a pointless feud of which very few people know the origin. Try and show why the play is serious. You are not asked to give opinions but simply just describe points from the story and use these to show why it is serious. For example talk about the ending of the play, what are the key things that happen Are you happy with how the play progresses Serious themes such as death, hate etc. Describe the impact that the feud has on the characters serious consequences. What impact it made on you How did you feel Were you frustrated, regretful or angry at stages during the play Did you feel that things could have worked out differently What were the key aspects that you reflected on The serious element of the play made the greatest impact on me. At the ending of the play it is

Thought-out the whole of the star stuck lovers Romeo and Juliet a lot of controversy was established about who caused the deaths of the children. First and foremost, in the story Friar Laurence is to be blamed fro the death of Romeo and Juliet, because throughout the story the story Friar saw the opportunity to end the feud between the two families. Resulting in Laurence taking the credit of ending the lifelong feud as quoted in Document C “to turn your household rancor to pure love.” Friar is also to blame for the miscommunication of Juliet’s planned death so for that reason Friar is to blame for the death of the lovers. Furthermore, the Capulets and the Montagues should be blamed for the death of Romeo and Juliet because of the long…

Death always tends to grasp people's attention, especially the deaths of children just like in Romeo and Juliet written by William Shakespeare. For the deaths of both Romeo and Juliet, the Families, Friar Lawrence, and Fate all played a part. First, the Capulet Family pushed Juliet to get married without considering how she felt, as well as Friar Lawrence, who planned for Juliet to fake her own death by giving her the potion. Although, they are only partially to blame, ultimately, Fate is the most to blame for both the children’s deaths due to Romeo and Juliet being destined to be together. Because of this, there is no way they could have avoided this tragic incident.…

Parenting is a responsibility beyond compare. The parents of today’s society carry the task of raising our next generation of adults. Both modern day parents as well as children face circumstances and issues that are particular to the 21st century. With today’s newfound technology and means of transportation, the scenarios that take place in Romeo and Juliet appear utterly ridiculous to us. The formalities and customs of the 1500’s were vastly contradictory to those of our era. Young girls, as young as age twelve, were married off to adult, sometime much old men. The story of Juliet Capulet and Romeo Montague is a textbook case of the “norm” in the 1500’s. Shakespeare emphasizes that extreme parental restriction and control can lead to destruction of true love, and sometimes, young lives as well.…

There are a number of theories as to why Romeo and Juliet take their lives. Most of these theories state that the couple’s selfishness and failure to love caused their demise. These are all possible causes of the tragedy, but there is one that is the definite answer: the pressure of religion and the idea of fulfilling God’s will led to their death. If religion were not a factor then the lovers would not have looked to Friar Lawrence-a man of God-for guidance. The Friar has referred to the couple’s marriage as being given to them by God. The prologue even states that the act which brought the “star-crossed” lovers together was caused by divine providence. Lastly, our very own Romeo and Juliet have stated that their marriage was an act of God. Since God was the being that brought this relationship together, it would only make sense that if one of partners died, the other would subsequently want to join their counterpart in Heaven.…

Romeo and Juliet has become forever associated with love, the play is an iconic story of love and passion. Shakespeare presents the theme of love in different way; he uses the relationships of different characters to embody different forms of love throughout the play. All three poems from my anthology also express this theme, of love and loving relationships, however each are expressed in a different ways based on the purpose in which they were written. For example Shakespeare’s demonstrates a parental loving relationship throughout the play through the character of “Lord Capulet”, he does this effectively by using structural devices such as iambic pentameter (10 syllables per line) to display love and affection towards his daughter, Juliet. The poem from my anthology also creates emotional voices as they use metaphors and other emotive language to portray this theme successfully... In this essay I will be comparing Romeo and Juliet to poems I have selected to gather a clearer understanding of the meaning behind each of the pieces of writing.…
