“Romeo and Juliet” Essay
The play “Romeo and Juliet”, written by William Shakespeare, is considered one of the most famous plays ever written. The story is about two “star-crossed lovers”, Romeo and Juliet, who are part of two feuding families. Juliet is a Capulet and Romeo is a Montague. Eventually the difficulties of being from two families that hate each other lead to their deaths. Romeo drinks a poison that kills him and Juliet stabs herself because of this. This tragedy causes the two fathers to create a truce and build statues honoring their children’s love for each other. Throughout the play, both Romeo and Juliet are deeply and madly in love with each other. Although they are both very young, I believe their love was mature. I say this because in those days the life expectancy of a healthy person was 40, maybe 50 if you were lucky. This meant that they had to start their lives earlier and go through all of the experiences of adulthood at a younger age. I also believe that as they grow older and spend more time together, they will fall more and more in love with each other and if their love was not mature before, it would be eventually. The text also shows examples of their love being mature.
One example from the text is the quote on page 788, lines 49-52.
“ROMEO: The measure done, I’ll watch her place of stand And, touching hers, make blessed my rude hand. Did my heart love till now? Foreswear it, sight! For I ne’er saw true beauty till this night.”
This dialogue from Romeo tells the audience that Juliet is breath-taking and Romeo falls in love with her at first sight. It also tells the audience that he has never been in love like this before which means that he will most likely stick by her side through thick and thin. I believe this shows that their love is mature because he knows how he feels and she really has an effect on him. Another quote that’s a good example of their love
