The original Shakespearean romantic tragedy is updated by Baz Luhrmann. it is set on a modern Verona Beach, where swords is just a brand of pistol and bored adolescence turn towards violence in the excellent rendition.
Baz Luhrmann’s more modern version of William Shakespeares play takes place in the costal city of Verona. This romantic drama has some big stars such as Leonardo Di Caprio as Romeo, and Juliet was played by Claire Danes. Di Caprio and Danes really performed brilliantly as well as all the other actors. They are very convincing actors.
Longtime business rivals, the Capulets and the Montagues absolutely despise each other. The servants are pretty much rival gangs. Romeo falls in love with Juliet after meeting at a Capulet party and realising who their true identities are. Romeo heavily relies on his crazy and outgoing friend, Mercutio, and Father Lawrence for support, advice and protection. On the other hand, Juliet is being forced into marrying the wealthy Paris by her Father. However Romeo and Juliet are madly in love already. Father Lawrence’s plan to put Juliet to rest in a temporary tomb goes terribly wrong when Romeo receives a piece of misinformation and brings a terrible tragedy to both of the multi-million dollar families.
One big aspect of this film is that Luhrmann decides to make the setting modern. However he chooses to still keep the Old English from the Shakespearean era. keeping this language is a bit confusing and old, nevertheless it does not ruin the movie and its easy to get use to and understand majority of what the characters are saying.
Another key aspect in this film is the sound effects and background music. Most of the sounds in the movie are quite loud and in your face, for example storms, gunfire and the noise of vehicles driving around. The background music is also similar being loud and very energetic, like the loud opera music. This is quite different but is not too over the top
