9. A Teenage Pro
So enamored with the game of golf, Rory received a club from his father at age two. The club followed him everywhere, even to bed. Rory would practice his swing every day, mastering his grip and learning about focus. Developing at a fast pace, Gerry McIlroy submitted Rory for membership at the Hollywood Golf Club.
After due consideration, Rory gained acceptance and became the youngest member, at seven years old. To pay for Rory’s instruction, Gerry worked several jobs, as did his Mother Rosie, who worked at the 3M factory. He was under the tutelage of Michael Bannon, the Hollywood Golf Club Golf Professional.

He created “The Rory Foundation”, as a way of bringing attention to the plight of children around the world. The ‘Six Bags” project promotes a children’s charity, by placing its name on Rory’s golf bag used in each of the first six tournaments Rory plays in every year.
He traveled to Haiti, after the earthquake, in January of 2010, to help young children cope with the trauma. “My parents sacrificed everything to allow me to play golf. But I know that every child is not so fortunate. My aim is that The Rory Foundation will support children's charities.”

Rory may be Irish, but he calls Palm Beach Gardens in South Florida home. He purchased a 15,286 square foot, contemporary mansion, with six bedrooms on the Intra-coastal Waterway. The mansion with plenty of space and windows provides McIlroy panoramic views of the neighborhood.
Florida is a prime location for professional athletes to live, as it does not impose a state income tax of earnings. When he’s not taking part in a tournament, Rory enjoys the sunny, warm Florida weather.
