Rory's Hard Choices
Rory had to make some really hard choices as a medium so she could survive because of Alexander’s decisions. Many conflicts in her life in London were caused by decisions other people decided to make that she had to face because they interfered in her life. To illustrate, Rory’s parents decided that after all the events that happened that they should take her back to Louisiana (363). Her parents had first asked if she wanted to stay but they never took her decision into consideration. If they would’ve let her actually choose if she wanted to stay or not then maybe their life would’ve been better now that the rippers were gone. Also, towards the end when Rory was in her bathroom she saw a woman standing there but when they touched her she disappeared

December 7, 1941 the United States entered World war II due to the attack of Pearl Harbor, Hawaii by the Empire of Japan. War entrance was not the only result of this vicious attack that devastated Americans. On February 19, 1942 two months after the U.S. declared war on the Axis powers, President Franklin D. Roosevelt signed Executive Order no. 9066. This order gave the United states the right to designate areas from which persons may be excluded. Therefore, this made it legal to detain Japanese Americans who lived in the United States and put them into internment camps. 120,000 ethnic Japanese were relocated to areas inland. The attack on Pearl Harbor left Americans with hysteria and fear, which triggered internment camps of Japanese Americans.…

Leslie was so emotionally hurt and distraught but it only made her stronger because she also said “A year ago I might have written about something silly, like ghosts, which I don’t even believe in, and even if I did, ghosts would not be at the top of my list. The scariest thing I can think of now is being all alone in this world (Grimes 54)”. After her mom’s death, she snapped into reality and realized how cruel it can be. Having to transfer schools and move away from all of her…

Inner conflict is the number one cause of depression and anxiety that is now found in approximately 3.2 million Canadian youth in today’s society. It is often an internal fight, man against self, one of the hardest battle one will ever have to face. With daily life, choices are always presented, and are made much harder when one is dealing with self conflict themselves. In the short story “ Choices” Susan Kerslake presents us with a young lady, Peggy, who starts of with making simple choices in the beginning of the story and later on bigger decisions that impact her choices from before. Another example of inner conflict is displayed in the poem “ My Last Duchess” by Robert Browning. In this poem the duke struggles with extreme jealousy towards…

In the dynamic novel, The Catcher in the Rye created by J.D. Salinger, portrayed Holden as a dishonest boy with sloth, pride, and wrath that caused trouble for him. With this thought in mind, Holden did not care to apply himself in school; soon you see sloth in him and his grades suffer because of that. Holden wrote about his life, school, and how he failed most of his classes. He even said, “I was flunking four subjects and not applying myself and all. They gave me frequent warning to start applying myself… but I didn’t do it” (Salinger 4). Holden only passed english, but he did not care about school so he did not work hard to learn new ideas and thoughts. His laziness resulted for him to fail subjects in school which will not help him in the future. Holden was kicked out of Pencey, one of his old…

    The Outsiders Monologue

Silence entered the air after I stepped out of my apartment complex. Slamming the door hard, I walked out of the building and started strutting down the sidewalk into town. Several arguments left the air after I stepped out into the cold, frosty morning of November in Tulsa, Oklahoma. My parents have been arguing for months now, and I can’t take it. I mean, they’re good parents and have given me a nice place and all, but they always are getting drunk and argue all the time. I’ve tried to leave home multiple times but I always end up winding back. I poked at my shaggy, greased blonde hair. I’m a labeled greaser and belong to Tim Shepard’s gang. I mean they’re fun and all, but sometimes I can’t stand them. They watch out for me, we’re buddies, but they’re always drunk and wound up in fights all the time. It’s just like at home, but with the gang I feel more like they’re not gonna leave me.…

Rory is an only child with a full-time mother, who usually asks for help when she needs something, so does not have as much practice trying to figure out things on her own. Jess expressed that Rory will try to do something herself first before she asks for help from mom. My suggestion is to lead and guide Rory to a pathway of discovering on how to solve a problem, as opposed to just doing it for her. Systematic Training for Effective Parenting (STEP) teaches parents to emphasize “giving the child a lot of responsibility and avoiding overprotection and unnecessary service” (Ashford, 2013, p. 397). For example, during the assessment, I gave some papers to Rory to carry and she accidently dropped them while we were walking. Instead of easily picked up the pieces of paper myself, I waited patiently while she gently picked up the papers one by one. Although it would have been much faster and convenient to pick up the papers myself, allowing Rory to face her natural consequence of not holding onto the papers will teach her to cling to them more…

In the beginning of the story Rory appears rather vain and irrational. He strives towards fitting into his own idea of the New York jet set, therefore he changes his behaviour: “…But no matter how much Rory ate, he stayed exactly the same. He took up smoking instead, although it burned his throat”1. He is pretending to be someone he is not, believing this change of behaviour will make him successful - “Fake it till you make it”. To emphasize this, Egan uses the Elmer’s glue as a catalyst to get Rory to reflect on his artificial life: the glue might look more appealing, but it is useless and fake as milk2. In the same manner Rory is misusing himself - he is not true to himself. “Rory had found this disturbing in a way he still didn’t quite understand”3. On a subconscious level he might be aware of this. Yet, it is not until the end of the story Rory realizes this.…
