After given the chance to reflect on chapter fourteen of Conformity and Conflict by Lee Cronk and chapter five of Northern Passage by Robert Jarvenpa, reciprocity was a huge theme and Mr. Jarvenpa continued his participant observation as well. Reciprocity was understood all the way back when the earliest white settlers established homes in New England. However, over time, the meaning of the word reciprocity has been lost. Furthermore, many modern Westerners such as us are not truly aware of what the purpose of gift giving is. For instance, we tend to use gifts to maintain long-term relationships and also because we feel a mutual obligation. By not fully understanding the meaning of reciprocity, we also run the risk of being misinterpreted and even causing harm. Also, the idea that gifts usually carry obligation with them is instilled early in life. Lastly, this chapter discusses how we have come to always expect something in return. Whether it is a gift of equal value or simply a word or two of gratitude, we expect something in return and we use these gifts to establish friendships and manipulate our positions in society. Ongoing, chapter five in Northern Passage consists of Mr. Jarvenpa continuing his fieldwork journey. First, Jarvenpa, and his crew of Antoine and his brother August, set up camp in the ‘big muskeg’ hunting for beaver. August demonstrates to Robert how to set up a trap consisting of steel jaws and a wooden stake that would assist them in catching a beaver. Essentially, what is established during this chapter is that August is in charge of the group, while Antoine and Robert observed him and followed any commands he made. However, most importantly, Mr. Jarvenpa and Antoine were in charge of gathering wood, setting up camp, cooking food, and help August to make his current task as efficient as possible. Overall, these two chapters were interesting because I was able to connect to the point of reciprocity which we have been discussing

There is something mysterious about the reason why people feel the need to look out for one another. In some cases, it is like humans feel a certain obligation of compassion. The Grapes of Wrath encourages this part of human nature. During the Joad’s westbound journey, the characters were held face to face with people who needed help just as much as they did. In this way, John Steinback presents the question: how can we as humans support the livelihood of one another? His answer is that humans must support each other’s livelihood by providing what others are deprived of.…

How people help their neighbors through tragedies and circumstances will determine how that society will thrive. As Claude Levi Strauss said, “It is the principle of reciprocity that holds a society together”. People have been helping each other survive for hundreds of years. Humans brand an action as kind by its performance, consequences, and by the person 's intentions. Reciprocity is considered a determining factor of human behavior. Reciprocity is trading favors or making a negotiation or a contract with another person. With reciprocity, a small favor can produce a sense of obligation to a larger return favor. This feeling of obligation allows an action to be reciprocated with another action. However, there is a sense of future obligation with reciprocity. It can help develop and continue relationships with people. Reciprocity works because children are taught at a young age to be polite and return favors. We teach our youth to treat people the way we would want to be treated.…

The need to return a favor: I feel this need does not apply to me because; it is nice at times to have a favor returned back to you but I feel when you do something for somebody it should be from the heart and you shouldn’t be expecting them to return the favor back to you, if they do that is great but when doing somebody that favor and in the back of your mind you are saying “next time when I need something they will do it for me because I just did this for them” I don’t find that being generous and doing something because you really want to, I find this doing something because you’re expecting something back in return for it. I personally find when I do something for people and I do it generously from the heart not expecting them to give anything back to me, I feel a lot better about what I just helped that person with. Now days it seems as if it is expected from somebody to return a favor back even if the person that did them a favor is not expecting anything back, they feel like the need to return that favor. So this really does not apply to me because I don’t expect favors returned back to me, and I don’t do favors for people I just like to help people out of being generous and nice.…

This type of reciprocity sustains the family in all societies. Parents give freely to their children, but they actually calculate how their children will reciprocate later. The social implications are reduced tensions, less envy and anger, and peaceful social relations. In exchange for gifts, a person can gain "social credit" for a potential return in the future. A parent that gives to their children may have their children take care of them later. Balanced reciprocity is explicit and short term in its expectations of return. This type of reciprocity involves an immediate exchange of goods or services or an agreed upon exchange of a limited amount of time. The exchange itself may be fun, adventuresome, or aesthetically pleasing or it may enhance social relations. Because each party has something the other wants it can enhance the relationship and cooperation between trading partners. The third is type is the Kula Ring. This type of reciprocity is practiced by the horticulture Trobriand Islanders who…

Often times, due to the continuous modernization happening in this fast changing society, people often overlook the little things. Be it being polite or by gently smiling to a disheartened stranger, people nowadays have outgrown the old fashioned mindset of giving back since they now know that in every action they take, there should be a corresponding result. They may clamour that they are just being practical but by abiding on that principle just because you expect something in return is not a justifiable reason. This fact is very evident in modern countries and sadly, it has…
