Royal Coat of Arms Investigation Questions
1. What does the lion represent? Why would the rulers of England include so many of them on the Coat of Arms?
The lion represents dauntless courage. England wanted to show its bravery and strength against other countries who wanted to intimidate the UK.

2. What does the fleur-de-lis represent? Why is it featured on the Coat of Arms of British rulers?
The fleur-de-lis was first introduced by Edward III in 1340 as his lineage was also a part of France’s from his mother.

3. Why is the Irish harp featured on the Coat of Arms?
The Irish harp was first featured by James I in 1630 because at this time the Kings of Ireland were the Kings of England – this was before Ireland’s rebellion for independence.

4. What does the unicorn represent? Why would the rulers of England choose a unicorn to support their shield?
The unicorn represents extreme courage, virtue, and strength. King James made the unicorn his symbol because it portrayed his great strength to capture the unicorn.

5. Why does the unicorn have a chain around its neck?
The unicorn has a crown around its neck displaying James’ status and a chain around it’s body to show the unicorn was once thought of as a strong and powerful beast. The chain shows James as a powerful king being able to suppress the beast.

6. The Coat of Arms includes two phrases, “Blessed are the peacemakers” and “Shame to him who evil thinks.” Choose one of these phrases and explain why a ruler might want it included in a coat of arms.
A ruler would want to include “ Blessed are the peacemakers” to advocate peace within the territory. This would help to ensure a wish for peace to eliminate potential evil.

7. Research one of the colors featured in the Coat of Arms. Based on what the color represents, explain why it would be used in a royal coat of arms.
The color red is used in almost all of the Coat of Arms. It shows that the region is a strong military power.

Coat of Arms

The shape of my shield is the classic shape. This shows that I’m an old soul. I prefer a lot of older, more classical ways of doing things. (Except school. I can’t sit still in a cold room to save my life.) I chose red because it means strength and is for a warrior or martyr. I view myself as a warrior/martyr for those that are scared to speak out because I was once that person. For the symbols I picked wings, a dragon, a cat, and a unicorn. Wings represent swiftness and protection and I chose this because I protect others. I can also be very fast when I want to. Dragons are the guardians of treasures and are the bravest of all creatures. I’ve been told I’m a brave person, and I sometimes feel as if I am guarding treasures. The unicorn is a symbol of purity and virtue. This is on there as a contradiction. I am nowhere close to being pure or virtuous. I mostly just love unicorns.
