A Ruby in the Rough
The novel Cold Mountain tells the main story of Inman and Ada. However, it also tells the story of Ruby the rough helper that has come to help Ada in her time of need. When Ruby first comes to Ada her personality is rugged and she does not open herself up. She is straight to the point and makes it clear to Ada that she is not a servant. It gives the sense that she is tough physically and emotionally and that maybe she has not had the best life. There is also a sense that Ruby is not like most girls because she knows many things a man does and she can do things physically that Ada struggles with. She also has a mystical side to her because she watches the stars and pays attention to the birds and sky to help her make decisions.
Ruby later opens up to Ada and tells her about her hard life and her deadbeat father. The reader finally learns why she is so rugged, because she is scarred. When Ada learns of this she has more respect for Ruby. Ada becomes a safe haven to Ruby because she has found somebody that cares and a place that she could have a good life. Ruby has found a place that she feels welcome which she never had with her father. Ada also becomes a friend to Ruby and she never had many friends before. Since it is just the two of them on the farm there is a special bond that forms between them. They become closer to each other than they have been with anybody else in their lives.
Ruby becomes a savior to Ada because Ada could not have survived long without some kind of help. However, they both become saviors to each other because Ruby was alone most her life and then she found Ada. When Stobord came to Ada’s house and found Ruby she was skeptical about letting him back in her life but she eventually started to help him and care for him again.
