The book “Ruby Red” by LINZI GLASS-2007 that I’ve read and “The power of one” the movie I have seen by John G.Avildsen, are both about the life in South Africa, how the three groups of people from different countries live together. Englishmen, Africaaners and South Africans. The book was about an English girl falling in love with a German boy, it’s quite similar to the film but in the film is it the other way around, an English boy falling in love with a German girl. The film is much about forbidden love, racism and consequences if you not follow the rules.
I liked the movie a lot more than the book, that’s because it was easier to see and understand the situation while watching the film. The thing that bothered me the most was racism, how they treated the little kid(PK) when he was sent to a school full of Africaaners and got beaten up several times. Also how everyone hated the Africans, which also got beaten up but more often because of their nationality and colour, which I wouldn’t call an excuse. But it was amazing to see how the blacks fought for freedom, for an example when the “policemen” came to the village and searched for PK, none of them told where he was, many of them died and got hurt but they still kept him safe. And how PK and Maria fought to see and meet each other even if their love was “forbidden”. I can find one thing with South Africa that is similar to Sweden, it’s a country with different nationalities from other parts of the world, but here in Sweden we don’t have such problems, as we can’t speak or love each other, we all live together just as if we all are the same. I think it’s terrible that you can’t be friends with who you want, love who you want, or even speak to who you want, I would not call that a life, more like hell where the devil rules. And speaking about not being able to love who you want, I feel sorrow for PK and Maria who have to see each other discretely and quiet when nobody sees.
