Ruckel And A Single Shard
Orphans are kids whose parents or guardians left them or died. There are two orphans in two stories Ruckel from a passage about orphans in Romania. Tree-ear is a character from the novel, A Single Shard. Tree-ear’s parents died of a fever. Ruckel lived in Romania, when his family got sick and they took him to an orphanage. Ruckel was left there, until he was adopted. These two orphans were abandoned by their parents. Ruckel felt like he was mistreated; Tree-ear has a good relationship with his guardian Crane-man.

Tree-ear is an orphan who is loved; He is treated like Crane-man’s son. They have a father son relationship. Tree-ear can help Crane-man with dinner and finding things. Ruckel is forced to watch kids. Ruckel has to do chores but the adults don’t teach him any lessons. Ruckel and Tree-ear both didn’t have a forever home. Tree-ear was given to Crane-man who lived under a bridge, and Ruckel was given to an orphanage after he got sick. Ruckel was abused physically and mentally. He was mistreated, and He didn’t know any other form of discipline other than being beat. Tree-ear is a very healthy person for being an orphan. Ruckel was very skinny, he had a bad leg, and he was very pale.

Tree-ear did more manual work like cutting trees and digging clay. Ruckel did not do much productive work. He was forced to watch babies. Ruckel did have one worker who treated him like her son. Tree-ear worked for Min a potter, but Ruckel just stayed at an orphanage. A similarity is Tree-ear and Ruckel both did not get a formal education. Tree-ear stayed with Crane-man and learned from him. Ruckel learned what he could from his care takers. Both orphans are also poor. Tree-ear lives under a bridge, and Ruckel lives in an orphanage he doesn’t have any
