More and more people choose to live in cities which offer more resources and education. However, rural area also has indispensable characters. In this essay, I will show you three differences between urban and rural areas based on my personal experience. Contrast Between Urban and Rural Areas After entering the college, I have broadened my insights about the world by contacting with urban areas and thereby observing a number of differences between cities and rural areas. As a child growing up in a primitive rural village, I was told to study in a city to seek a competitive advantage. With curiosity and anticipation, I wondered what I was going to experience. During the few years I have noticed that the rural and urban areas, given their distinctive backgrounds, are distinguishing in interpersonal relationships, lifestyles, and the memories of childhood. The obvious difference is the relationship between people. At the time when I took courses in Taipei, every day I stepped out the apartment of my relative, locked the door with three locks, walked alone on the streets, and then took the MRT to my destination. Day by day, I didn’t even recognize those who lived next door. Curiosity, however, made me play the speculating game, peeking at the person’s direction and imagining how many people lived behind the doors. It was confirmed that people living in the city seldom know their neighbors. In contrast to the city’s indifference, the relationship in the rural area is warm. Living harmoniously, people share their harvest to neighbors, get together cheerfully chatting about their crops and children at comfortable summer nights, and greet neighbors with smile which I seldom see in the city. The second diversity I observe is the living pace.
