Elisabeth and her family may not have known it but they were extremely resilient during this time in their lives. Having to live three years in a concentration camp was enough for her mother and others to realized if they were to stay they might not make it. So, they escaped and headed for Austria. The journey was long and tough. Walking through marshes, forests and fields only at night so they wouldn’t be seen, eating whatever grew in the fields. Eventually, they made it across the border. Once in Austria they were given medical attention and they were able to go to school. Not only did she show perseverance in the journey to Austria but also in the decision to open new opportunities for herself. After living a few years in Austria she applied for Canada. In May of 1984 she left her family and headed to Canada. Traveling with her friend, they made their way to Winnipeg, Manitoba. That was where her new life would begin.
