Love At First Chip
Love At First Chip
Ruth Wakefield invented the chocolate chip cookie in the early 1930’s. The phenomenal cookie was an accident. Wakefield thought that by adding some chips from a Nestle chocolate bar would make the cookie dough like a chocolate cookie, not a chocolate chip cookie.
Ruth Wakefield graduated from Framingham State Normal School Department of Household Arts in 1924. She was a dietician and lectured on food. Wakefield then went on to open a tourist lodge called the Toll House Inn with her husband. The creation of the famous cookies was in the Toll House Inn.

pieces of a Nestles semi sweet chocolate bar, the chocolate would melt and make the dough more chocolate. This cookie was a fortune of accident. When she gave her mistake to the customers, they loved them. They were called Toll House Crunch Cookies. She put them on the menu and they became a huge hit!
The cookie became very popular when the Boston newspaper published the recipe. The sales at the Toll House Inn went up and so did the sales of the Nestle chocolate bar. When Betty Crocker made the recipe on her T.V. show, it became known around the nation. After this, Nestle began selling these cookies to the public in 1940.
In the 1940’s Ruth sold all legal rights of the cookie of to Nestle. They lost the trademark rights in court and now Toll House is the descriptive name for them. Now chocolate chip cookies are made world round and there are many different variations. Nestle decided to make a brand of chocolate chips with Toll House on them. They are known as Nestle Toll House Semi Sweet Chocolate Chips. They have the original recipe on the back. Nestle still has their chocolate bars but they are now scored so it is easier to cut into small pieces. These bars were made specifically for the recipe and have it printed on the back as well.
To this day chocolate chip cookies are one of America’s favorite cookies. They are sweet, chocolaty, and nearly no one can resist a homemade chocolate chip cookie when offered. Many people associate classic chocolate chip cookies with grandmothers, well if your grandmother or great-grandmother lived in the 1930-40’s when they first came out then yes they probably are the original recipes.
