In “The Color of Water”, when the father dies, there are different kind of grief that is being showed and the kind of sympathy from James McBride and the mother. And this showed by, James’ mother often mourned for a little while, as James remembered she would question herself and even think as if she’s “Dead” to the family. And even spoke full fluent Yiddish to merchants. “she snapped when the merchant lapsed into Yiddish amongst themselves during negotiations over a pair of shoes.”(McBride 86).…
Mcbride recognizes how the contrasting cultures and beliefs that come with each group of people creates resentment between different peoples. McBride asserts that people hate those who are different from themselves primarily through the racism he depicts in The Color of Water. For instance, when McBride depicts how his mother, Ruth, raises him and his eleven other siblings, he depicts how Ruth is constantly abused and ridiculed by the black community. McBride argues how the black community loathes his mother due to the actuality that she was a white woman raising James and his mixed siblings.…

James’ mother’s experience in a public school is very similar to James’ but also has some differences. When James’ mother attended a public school she changed her name from Rachel to Ruth because it seemed less “Jewish”. Ruth was racially divided, with a all white school and a all black school. Ruth only made one friend, a girl named Frances. Ruth was very serious about getting her education. Ruth says, “You’re a human being...Educate yourself or you’ll be a nobody.. if you’re a nobody… It doesn’t matter what color you are”(Chapter 10). Ruth hated her father as a child, her father disliked black people so it seemed right for Ruth to marry a black man. Ruth ends up meeting a black man named peter and gets pregnant by him. Ruth’s experience…
The education of James Mcbride and Ruth have had a well education, has many similarities and differences. In their lives they both had to deal with racism or some sort of public hatred. Ruth who was a Jewish girl in the South was not accept by the other whites. at all times she could see people stare at her “with hate in their eyes” (McBride 80). Additionally, James was ridiculed for being black in a white school so much he often tried to “escape from painful reality” (90). At their schools, they are different from the majority and are hated for it. Neither were ever truly accepted by their peers. Secondly, they both have parents who pushed for them to have an education. Ruth’s parents and James’ mom, Ruth, “raised their children…
“The Color of Water”, written by James McBride, is a memoir. The book was introduced to us in 1995. The main narrator, James, born in the year of 1957 to an African-American father and a Jewish mother. James, at that time, was not to keen about the black power in the sense he had a white mother. During the Civil Rights, his stepfather had passed away. From this point on; James realizes the true responsibility of himself towards his friends and family. He unveils his true self to the world with his memoir entitled “The Color of Water”. His mother’s name was Ruth McBride. Her story was also compelling. Ruth, born in Poland in the year of 1921. Ruth was an immigrant to the United States. Later in her life, she met her black husband Andrew Dennis…
Okay, so I was in first grade. Lisa Frankel's first grade classroom, one of the biggest in the whole school. It had a single stall bathroom in it and one of those foam mats. You know the ones I’m talking about right? They’re made of this foam material and they’re shaped like puzzle pieces, so you can just buy them separately and put them together. They had a rug too, with the alphabet on it because first graders need help identifying letters or something [laughs uncomfortably] I don’t know. So yea, Lisa Frankel's class, she was pretty nice. Her teacher’s aide was an ass, but I’m getting to that. We’re little, and our handwriting is a disaster, so we’re practicing writing the number 8. Up until then the trick was to draw two connected circles,…
The story The Color of Water takes place in several different regions from Suffolk, Virginia to the city of Harlem, New York. James McBride is the author and it is an autobiography of his life, and his mother, Ruth. The story reveals James’ life with eleven other siblings, the hardship of being interracial, the struggles of poverty, and his mother’s strong character. Ruth’s strong determination led her twelve kids to become successful doctors, nurses, lawyers, musicians, poets, and most importantly parents. However, it was not easy being a single white mother of twelve interracial kids. She had an unwavering faith in God and strong moral convictions. To Ruth, issues of race and identity took secondary importance to moral beliefs. The story The Color of Water brings an interesting perspective and determination to the audience. The overall value of the story is important and relevant to know, that it does not matter where you come from nor the color of your skin, but what you do in this life that matters. James McBride had the inspiration to write this story as a tribute to his mother. He realized that his siblings nor him knew anything about his Ruth’s painful past. Therefore, she refused to discuss her painful reality at first, and then she caved. He began traveling and searching on a first-hand experience interviewing people from his mother’s past. The reason, why his mother did not agree with James’ idea is because she was not ready to confront her painful reality. However, James’ vision led to an amazing inspiring story about the life of his mother, and her twelve successful children.…
He was always wondering why his mother’s skin color was different than the other mothers. When he asked his mother, “Am I black or white?” she responded, “You’re a human being. Educate yourself or you’ll be nobody.” Then one day he asked his mother, “What color is God’s spirit?” And she answered, “It doesn’t have a color. God is the color of water. Water doesn’t have a color.” I love this quote, because it is so spiritual and its meaning is so true. Ruth was saying that God is not black or white and thus he loves all races equally. Race doesn’t make people worthy of God's grace. Although James did not understand at that time, he does now. He understands why his mother put him and his siblings in white schools, not only because they are the best, but because white people shouldn’t be the only ones able to have a great education. Through his mother, he learned that color does not matter especially because everyone is equally God’s…

There are a lot of colors that could be used to describe the characters in The Great Gatsby by F. Scott Fitzgerald, but one that really stands out is the color green. The color green is most represented by money, hope, and fertility. By describing someone by using the color green, you could be saying that they have high self-respect and well-being. In The Great Gatsby, F. Scott Fitzgerald uses green a lot in the money side of the color. Green could also mean learning, growth and harmony, which you see some of is The Great Gatsby. The color green is also described as the color of balance, and is designated as the safe color. The characters that the color green represent the best are Jay Gatsby, Daisy Buchanan, and Tom Buchanan. Fitzgerald uses the color green to describe Jay Gatsby, Daisy Buchanan, and Tom Buchanan.…
“As a boy, I never knew where my mother was from.” James McBride’s memoir, The Color of Water: A Black Man's Tribute to His White Mother, talks about James’ and his mother’s culture and identity. In the book, both Ruth and James were able to overcome obstacles in order to resolve both internal and external conflicts in their lives.…
Moses's ancestors were slaves so he knew how to deal with cotton really well. He was also very respectful and grateful and never felt like Edna owed him anything, all he asked for was a place to stay and some food to get him by. Racism also ties into the social aspect of this movie because most of the town was extremely racist against African Americans. The higher authorities in the town were heavily involved in the KKK and made up most of the group. They were racist against Moses because he was black and had no respect for him whatsoever because he was African American. They referred to them as "niggers" and expected the worst in them. Such as when the cotton seller was really rude Moses when he saw that Moses was actually educated as opposed to the typical stereotype that the whites so strongly believed in being that African Americans were stupid and…
