When a song is as heavily covered as Fats Domino’s “Ain’t That A Shame” from his album Rock and Rollin with Fats Domino you know that there is something special about it. With recording artists such as Pat Boone, Frankie Valli and the Four Seasons, and even the 1970s rock group, Cheap Trick recording the song many people know at least one version. However the original version has a special something about it that helps it stand out from the many covers. The song has an enticing hook, interesting historical context, and is an earworm that was with me for several days after I first heard the song.…
I chose the song “Car Radio” by Twenty One Pilots because it is very poetic and notes the fragility of human existence. My choosing of the song also came from its popularity and ability to resonant with a crowd. I practiced by memorizing the song, timing myself, trying varying tempo and pitch. I also practiced with varying levels of chattel going on from working over the sound of the television and the cacophony of hammers from the work that was going on outside my house. When I woke up on the morning of the speech, I was fine.…

Twenty One Pilots is an alternative/indie band made up of two members, Joseph and Josh Dunn. They are known to occasionally rap and include specific tempos and beats that correspond with each song’s thought provoking lyrics. In the song “Oh. Ms. Believer” by Twenty One Pilots they use the analogy of snow to describe a young girl going through depression. The band accurately describes the feeling of being trapped inside one's mind as they go through the hardships of this mental illness. Although at first this song may be interpreted as another cliché alternative hit, the meanings hidden beneath the lyrics are sure to tug at the listener's heart strings as he/she looks through the eyes of someone who struggles with a loved one who is depressed.…
Katrina Van Tassel’s playlist would have songs about how she's really fancy, how she's spoiled, and how she is beautiful. The first song that would be on her playlist would be “Fancy” by Iggy Azalea. The author says in the book, “ She was a blooming lass of eighteen peaches…” (33). She would have this song on her playlist because it says,” I'm so fancy, you already know”. Another song she would have on her playlist would be “barbie Girl” by Katy Perry because of how spoiled she is . Author Washington Irving says in the book, “...have been playing off any of her…” (80). She would have this song on her playlist because Katy Perry sings, ” you can brush my hair…”. The last song on her playlist would be, “Just the Way You Are”…
After I annotated this song and actually looked into what the lyrics were saying I learned that not everyone is who you think they are. For instance, you hide a lot of things from people not because you want to ,but because you don’t know how to tell them or maybe you’re afraid of what they will think of you. In the song ‘Demons’ by Imagine Dragons the singer says,”I wanna hide the truth’(Imagine dragons line 8 box 3) ,but then he says,” don’t want to hide the truth.”( Imagine Dragons line 35 box 8) I think that he is having mixed feelings what he should do. He is afraid that if he tells you that you may leave him or you won’t look at him the same way ever again.…
Problems between composers and the general public have been mounting for over one hundred years. As advanced music rapidly changes, the public seemingly fails to posses the musical knowledge necessary to appreciate modern works of contemporary music. In 1958, Milton Babbitt examined this relationship in a piece entitled “Who Cares if You Listen?” In the article, Babbitt asses the public’s feelings on “advanced” music and concludes that it should not concern composers if their work doesn’t get an audience beyond a few colleagues. Musical masterpieces including Babbitt’s Semi Simple Variations and Stockhausen’s Gesang der Jünglinge exemplify why this is the case. Despite efforts to reach out to the public by composers such as Krzysztof Penderecki, the divide that separates these entities is even greater today.…
Mackey wrote this song about ten years ago. The song has many expressions of thoughts as well as feelings, emotions, and even history. First off the title itself shows the main idea of the song. The…
Jermaine Lamarr Cole better known as J-Cole was born in Germany but raised in North Carolina. Cole’s grades earned him a scholarship to St. John’s University in New York. During college, he knew he could make it in the music world. Jay-Z was Cole’s idol. He would stand outside his office, hoping and praying he would run into him, so he could give him a demo of his work. One day, Cole ran into his idol, and a couple of days later he received a call from the man. J- Cole was signed to Roc Nation. In 2011, Roc Nation released his first debut, Cole World. Miguel Primentel, a R&B and soul artist, was a breath of fresh air to the R&B game in the 2010-2013 time frame. The Ballad “Candles in the Sun” was a simple, yet powerful song with a very nice message. This song was released on his second studio album Kaleidoscope Dream on September 25, 2012. Candles in the sun didn’t chart because wasn’t a single, but the album was number three on the Billboard 200 (Wikipedia 2016). “I wanted to create a song and visual that addressed my everyday concerns of life” (Miguel 2013) The song was very repetitive but had an amazing message. The song was to make you think and call to attention to the problems of the world. During 2011 and 2012 there were conflicts in the middle east, many countries had political…

“Talking shit about a pretty sunset,” is a song that portrays an overall apathetic outlook on life. Thoughts of suicide, phobia of commitment, lack and gain of motivation, fixation and illusions of a better life are all present. Through the complex breaks and climax of the song, tells an emotional story of revelation, realization and self-actualization.…
Several radio stations nowadays feature pop songs because they are somehow catchy and popular, hence the name of the genre. Making a new pop hit on the radio is very difficult because there are so many creative aspects in a typical pop song. In addition to that, all pop songs are different with very unique components to them.…
They’re blaming themselves not to appreciate time and let it fly away. In Macklemore's second verse his tone is upset because of the things he didn’t do when he had the opportunity or did do something bad instead of the good. He’s referring to the platitude, which says that “the…
Don't look at me is the first line of Christina Aguilera's song "Beautiful." This instant whisper from the voice of Aguilera creates an ashamed vibe for the song. It is spoken quietly and without any musical instrumentation. As the music softly and brilliantly builds up to the first verse listener's already have a misinterpretation of the lyrics. The audience presumes that the song will be about depression or shame and disgrace because one would associate not wanting people to look at you with shame. However, once they read more into the lyrics they notice that the meaning of the song is much deeper than shame and actually has an opposite message. When the audience hears the title of the song they could also make the assumption that the song is about beauty and the images of pop stars, although it is about finding beauty in everyone. Beautiful is something or someone that is 'pleasing to the senses.' We all have inner beauties that define us as individuals.…
