S. E. Hinton's 'Sometimes Life Is Unfair'
S.E Hinton makes the claim : "Sometimes life is unfair". This can be seen when Tim Shepard, one of Dally's buds, came to visit him and was surprised when he saw Dally's name in the newspaper without a bad headline on top of it.As seen on page 105 in the novel "The Outsiders" the character Dally who is a mean, uneducated, poor young man stated,"'Said he saw my picture in the paper and couldn't believe it didn't have 'Wanted Dead or Alive' under it.'"This means that Tim Shepard felt surprised to see that Dally did not do anything wrong, but on the contrary he did something good. This proves the claim S.E Hinton makes " Sometimes Life is Unfair " because since most of the people already know that Dally and the Gang are "bad" people because they

Johnny and Dally share one big similarity and that is that they both have abusive parents. Johnny’s parents don’t pay any attention to him or they beat him, that really bugs Johnny. The rest of the gang notices that and they show Johnny the affection that he needs. Ponyboy says “‘His father was always beating him up, and his mother ignores him”’ (12). It is very obvious that Johnny is sensitive about his situation at home. Dally is the opposite of Johnny is his situation at home, he does not care about his parents or if they care about him. Dally says to Johnny, “‘My old man don’t give a hang whether I’m in jail or dead in a car wreck or drunk in the gutter. That don’t…

Body Paragraph 1: The one most affected by these negative labels is Dally because the words they used to describe him is hood, crook, greaser, hopeless, criminal, and heartless. These are incredibly destructive labels because he got so used to them that he does not love anyone back and I think it is because of his label Heartless. Dally even said “He could never love Cherry Valance back” He barely even loved anything I mean besides the gang and he really did not care when Johnny said he killed Bob Dally just said “Good for you.” He is also addicted to hate because he used to everyone hating him or just saying other things about him. I think he needs a quote like this one “Dear haters I couldn’t help but notice that AwesoMe ends with Me and Ugly starts with U.” That quote explains Dally in my opinion.…

In the media, black people and black men in particular are villainized and portrayed as disturbed and violent individuals. Statistics of incarceration and crime rates are often cited in rhetoric debasing the black community. Yet in just a few pages, Ta-Nehisi Coates expertly dissects how America’s institutionalized racism and eagerness to turn a blind eye to social issues contributes to the hostile environment many black people occupy in his book Between the World and Me. In his book he talks about the difficulties of being raised in an impoverished and violent neighborhood and his realization that these conditions are remnants of America’s history - such as the over-policing of black Americans and police brutality, which breeds fear and feelings…

Between the World and Me is a book written by Ta-Nehisi Coates and published three years ago in July by Spiegel and Grau. This book is structured as a letter to the author’s 15- year old son. In this letter, Coates speaks to his son about his overall place in America as a young Black man, being that this is a nation rich in racism and discrimination. To further delve into this topic with his son, Coates uses an excerpt from The Fire Next Time by James Baldwin as well as his personal experiences growing up as a young Black man in America. This novel has found continued success because of its level of relatability within the Black community; in so many words, it is everything many Black men needed to hear for themselves,…

The thing about Dally that would’ve stayed the same, is probably his personality. This is because it is so strong it is just so hard to change. He is tough, mean, risky, and overall a crazy person. These qualities you can’t change most of the time. He dedicated his whole life to trying to be the bad boy of the group, and really get out there. He succeeded doing this because many people were afraid of him, and many people generally loved him. “Dally hated to do things the legal way,” (Hinton 20). In this quote it explains how Dally played by his own rules. It shows that he won’t obey the laws…

"And that opportunity played a critical role in their success" (30 Gladwell). Many times, people will argue that if you want something, you can achieve it simply through hard work; however, that is not always the case. In Malcolm Gladwell's Outliers, he explains the significant amount of opportunities that successful people are given. Gladwell uses the example of Joe Flom to explain how timing is a huge factor in success. Early in his career, he was declined by a huge law firm, and had to settle for a firm that was just starting out. Even though this seems like a disadvantage, it turned into an opportunity because the new law firm turned out to grow into one of the best. Another example used in Outliers would…

He saved Ponyboy’s life. Dally gave Pony the jacket that prevented his back from catching on fire. After Pony was knocked unconscious Dally ran inside the building and saved Johnny from being burnt to death. The newspaper even called him a hero. In the novel, Ponyboy exclaims, “For once, there weren't any charges against Dally, and I knew he'd be mad because the paper made him out a hero for saving Johnny” (pg. 107) This part of the novel shows that Dally is a hero, because he thought about his friends' health and safety instead of his…

To begin, Dally helped Pony and Johnny get away when they were in trouble. Dally told Johnny and Pony “Hop the three-fifteen freight to Windrixville.” “There’s an abandoned church on the top of Jay Mountain.” (Hinton 61). This demonstrates how Dally doesn’t want Pony and Johnny to get put in jail like him, so he helps them get out of town so no one can catch them. Secondly, Dally saved Johnny from the fire at the church. The nurse said to Pony “He burned his arm pretty badly though, trying to drag the other kid out the window.” (Hinton 95). This means Dally risked his life just like Johnny did for Pony, to save Johnny from the fire when he got trapped. As you can see, Dally showed he was a hero during the book.…

When Lennie died, he had just killed Curley’s Wife and George knew that his punishment from Curley would be atrocious, so George decided to kill Lennie himself out of love, even though he did not want Lennie to die. “His hand shook violently, but his face set and his hand steadied….George shivered and looked at the gun, then he threw it from him, back up on the bank, near the pile of old ashes.” (pg 106) He George knows that once Lennie dies, he will become one of the “loneliest guys in the world”, just like the lonely men he describes in his story to Lennie. “Guys like us got no family. They make a little stake an’ then they blow it in. They ain’t got nobody who gives a hoot in hell about ‘em…but not us.” pg 104. At the point in the book when Dally dies, Johnny had just died, and Dally dies by holding a loaded gun to the police and getting shot. When Dally dies, in a way, he commits suicide because Johnny was Dally’s only soft spot, and now he is dead. “Please, not him... not him and Johnny both--I knew he would be dead, because Dally Winston wanted to be dead and he always got what he wanted.” (pg 154) Though it might have appeared like that, Dally’s death was not an accident and he was fully aware that the police would shoot him. The theme of death in The Outsiders and Of Mice And Men affects the characters and the plot of the story in a massive…

A strong similarity between Johnny and Dally is that they both have parents who abuse and neglect them. Half of the time Dally’s father does not know where he is. Life is not always fair. Today it’s not been fair to you. Tomorrow it will be unfair to another person. People take life not being fair in a good way and some take it in an awful way. Everyone is different and treated different. In the book To Kill a Mockingbird by Harper Lee, there are people that face life not being fair at times, like Scout, Tom Robinson and Calpurnia.
