One of the largest problems facing society today is substance abuse. The individuals that face this issue are able to receive services…
A program in which the community collaborates with the healthcare personnel in offering counseling, referrals and rehabilitation services is crucial in dealing with substance abuse in San Francisco. As described by Drevdahl et al. (2001), this partnership must establish programs owned by the youth in which the youth come together to discuss the harmful effects of substance abuse as well as establish constructive activities that would discourage them from further engaging in substance abuse (Drevdahl et al.,…
These members are healthcare organizations and management entities that provide treatment and support within their community. Every year they provide billions of dollars for psychiatric crisis services; addiction prevention programs; outpatient medication and psychotherapy; community education; and rehabilitation to name a few. These services are funded through federal, state and local grants; Medicaid; Medicare; and commercial insurance. Affiliate members of the National Council for Behavioral Health are healthcare vendors that offer a wide range of services and products, such as accreditation; consultant and technical assistance; insurance; managed care; health information technology systems; and pharmacy. The key health care issue of this stakeholder and its members is ensuring that adults and children have access to mental health and substance use treatment. On behalf of the millions of Americans that struggle with mental health and substance use disorders, they advocate for policies that will ensure these individuals have access to the needed services. With the passing of the Affordable Care Act (ACA), the National Council created a timeline for implementation of the major provisions in the ACA.…
Two populations that I might work with as a human service professional are “Push-outs” were forced out of their homes by parents are landlords and Runaways leaving their homes because of an intolerable situation that they can not bear it anymore. With an intervention, we are going to make things better for the client. As a human service professional I will need to identify the problem and develop realistic objectives to help establish a timeline to measure the process. For the push-outs and runaways, I would help both groups with finding shelter. Finding temporary shelter with the hope of finding a permanent home so they will be able to have a place to call home. The three shelters offered are emergency shelters, and daytime drop-in centers…
The data for the study are from 184 community leaders, and informants spread across the United States, in the cities of Baltimore, Milwaukee, Detroit, Los Angeles, San Antonio, Oakland, and Raleigh. The cities were chosen on the basis of 5 years or more history of activism against alcohol abuse. The funding for the study was provided from the grants of the National institute of Alcohol Abuse and Alcoholism, and the Substance Abuse Research Policy Program at the Robert Wood Johnson Foundation. The data was collected through interviews from the informants and community leaders in each of the respective communities. These informants were selected using the snowball sampling techniques. For an individual to be considered for an interview, he or she must be referred by two or more informants. The data collection took almost two and a half years i.e. from 1996 to 1999. Majority of the data i.e. 40 informants each were collected from the Oakland and Los Angeles i.e. from the state of California. The rest of the 104 informants were from the remaining five cities across the country, with 28 informants from Milwaukee, and 17 to 21 informants each from San Antonio,…
63). The Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration (SAMHSA) is a program to address the needs of children and youth and their families. When schools are part of the system of care they can help assist when crisis situations arise. A team approach is better than an individual approach and the “integration of education, health and social welfare services provides support to vulnerable children growing up in today’s economy.”(Woodside 2011, pg.63). When children don’t have the family support at home, it’s hard for them to want to focus on education when they are really focused on when their next meal is going to be or what is going to happen to them when they get home. By providing these services at school, they can get free meals to help alleviate these symptoms and allow them to learn, so that they don’t continue down the same path that they already live in. By providing counseling in schools these children trust their teachers that are there for them day in and day out and they feel comfortable talking with them about situations that are happening at home. The school is then able to get them the help they need within their home lives.…
Substance abuse and dependency persist as a major health and social concern in America. Author Joseph A. Califano, a former secretary of Health, Education, and Welfare notes, “it is hard to find an American family or circle of friends that substance abuse has not touched directly (Califano, J. A., p. 1, 2008).” Califano further explains that although Americans are 4 percent of the world’s population, Americans consume 65 percent of the world’s illegal drugs. Furthermore, one in four Americans will have an alcohol or drug disorder at some point in his or her life. Most of these individuals have parents, children, siblings, friends, community and colleagues who will “undergo psychological and social harm" (Califano, J. A., p. 1, 2008.).” Authors…
The best way to help an alcoholic is to set up an intervention in which part of the family members and or loved ones will sit down together with the alcoholic addict to confront him with the reality of his situations. Since everyone in the family is involved and suffered to the situation of the alcoholic addiction; everyone should step up and make a move to get help through treatment and intervention. “Alcohol addiction affects individuals physically and psychologically which may lead if immediate action is not taken” (Alcoholic Intervention-800-303-2482). Alcoholism intervention is a serious responsibility that must be completed by the help of the family members and or love ones to be prepared in conjunction with guidance from substance professionals throughout the treatment process. According to the Alcoholic Intervention-800, “An alcoholic intervention refers to the process of confronting an alcoholic by immediate associates and family members regarding how his drinking behavior is affecting surrounding people negatively. An alcoholic intervention is aimed at convincing the drinker to seek professional help at rehab centre or treatment facility” (Dec.05). The idea of including family members in the therapy process is to include variety of issues such as: trauma, stress that everyone has been affected by the impact of the tragic addiction illness.…
When turning on the television or opening a newspaper, the American population is faced with disdaining reports of numerous social problems. Social problems are all around us, lurking on every street across America. Obesity, substance abuse, homelessness, and sexuality inequality are a few social problems Americans face on a daily basis. Of the social problems that exist in America, this essay will focus on substance abuse, in particular the rise of heroin abuse and heroin related deaths. Alcoholism is a very dangerous disorder that many people are suffering from. A lot of Americans don’t realize that alcoholism is a big deal, and they may not even know someone very close to them is an alcoholic. For the paper I chose to sit in on an alcohol anonymous meeting and this is what I observed.…
Obesity is a health condition where a person is significantly above the ideal healthy weight. “People with a body mass index of 30 or higher are considered obese” (AHA, 2017). The medical condition, obesity, leads to reduced life expectancy and/or increased health problems such as heart disease, stroke, high blood pressure, and diabetes. According to the National Heart Lung and Blood Institute, (2016) “about 97 million adults are overweight or obese” (p. 1). Due to the nature of the effects of obesity, it is important to have a personal health improvement plan. Incorporating a personal obesity prevention plan leads to a happy and healthy life.…
Medical Cannabis or as most know it, Medical Marijuana, is parts of the herb cannabis used as a doctor- recommended form of medicine. It also refers to synthetic forms of cannabinoids, which are a class of diverse chemical compounds that activate cell membrane receptors, like Tetrehydrocannabinol (THC), which is why it is recommended from doctors as well. THC is the psychoactive drug in Medical Cannabis that works with the central nervous and immune system to help reduce pain seen in different medical issues, like cancer patients or patients with AIDS. Medical Cannabis is illegal in most countries. In the United States, federal law outlaws, all use of herb parts from Cannabis, while some states have approved use of herb parts from Cannabis as medical cannabis in conflict with federal law. The United States Supreme Court ruled that the federal government has a right to regulate and criminalize cannabis, even for medical purposes. A person can therefore be prosecuted for a cannabis-related crime. Medical Cannabis has been known to be used as a good thing as well, like to alleviate pain. Medical Marijuana is looked at from many perspectives, for example, physicians, medical organizations, and even government officials. They all have different views. Some think it is a good thing and others bad. It is also looked at as health risks and treatment options as well.…
Each year in the United States several million children experience some extreme traumatic event. Some of these events include natural disasters, death of a loved one, vehicle accidents, physical and/or sexual abuse and witnessing domestic violence. Children are increasingly exposed to violence in society. Many of these children may develop some form of psychological problems that can significantly impair their emotional, academic, and social functioning. Research has noted that many of these children will become fearful of their environment and develop expectations that their future will be unhappy. These children are in need of interventions to help them develop productive modes of coping. Over the years there have been many therapies and interventions researched in treating children with various behavior, emotional and psychological problems. Many children are treated for Post Traumatic Stress Disorder after witnessing traumatic events. It is my hypothesis that there is no one therapy alone, but that a combination of therapies would prove to be successful in helping children who have witnessed domestic violence. Also I believe that age, gender and severity of exposure will have an effect on how successful the intervention will be. Current literature addresses traumatic experiences that children have faced. This paper will explore interventions that have been used to treat children who have witnessed domestic violence, a traumatic experience, and discuss the effectiveness of the interventions.…
