SMART Goal: Managing Patient-Centered Care
Historically, a career in Nursing has not always been one that was respected as a noble and honorable job. Once frowned upon by the elite classes, nursing was a job expected of the lower class. In 1853 however, a young woman belonging to an elite British family, named Florence Nightingale, would change that. From a young age, she believed that her divine purpose in life was to care for the ill and wounded. After reforming healthcare during the Crimean War and dedicating her life to her career, she became the pioneer of modern nursing. Giving the parents a chance to be present, to potentially ask questions, to understand on a more concrete level the care that is needed for their child, is a big step towards improved quality of care. IT provides a chance for parents to feel as though they are being heard, and creates a much deeper level of respect between professional and parent. Prior to the implementation of this policy, our unit has been closed during the hour we have designated for shift change. This will no long apply. Parents will be able to remain in the unit and be involved in the hand off report on their child. Creating a family-centered care environment is a major part of having successful experiences, and helps these families to feel as though they have played a part in their infant’s recovery. Overall, “family-centered care has shown to have a number of benefits including decreased length of stay, enhanced parent–infant attachment and bonding, improved well-being of pre-term infants, better mental health outcomes, better allocation of resources, decreased likelihood of lawsuits, and greater patient and family satisfaction” (Cooper et al., 2007, p. …show more content…
