Concert Attendance Report #3

On Friday, December 6th, I attended the Sac State Vocal Jazz Ensembles. The show began with special guests Christian Brothers Vocal Jazz. This young group of singers were extremely talented for their age. They held their harmonies and expressed their talents in each piece they performed. It was quite impressive and heartwarming because these students looked so into the music that it showed the passion they have for singing and vocal jazz. Following these talented young students, the Sac State Jazz Singers came on stage and did an excellent job at their pieces as well. I appreciated the song choices and arrangements for each piece. They definitely showed the hard work and practice they put into each piece and I overly enjoyed the show they put on. With all of the songs from both groups, dynamics, harmonies, unison, scatting, and different rhythms, especially in 4/4 time signature, were portrayed throughout.

I respected the professionalism and passion that the Christian Brothers Vocal Jazz portrayed through their performance. It was nice to see young students who showed interest in vocal jazz and performed it very well. Though, I would have to say my favorite pieces came from our own Sac State Jazz Singers, “I’ve Got Life” by Take 6, which was accompanied by a three man band, piano, bass, and drums, who all did an excellent job, and “Radioactive” by Imagine Dragons/Pentatonix. “I’ve Got Life” featured singer Pam Shankar who is an outstanding singer. She had such a jazzy, bluesy, and soulful voice. The song “Radioactive” was amazing especially because it was similar to the arrangement of the group Pentatonix and was A cappella while Ian Miclat was beat-boxing throughout. I was very into the feel of the music that it kept me bobbing my head. I enjoyed these the

The concert that I chose to attend was the Gramophone award winners, Pavel Haas Quartet. Veronika Jaruskova, Marek Zxiebel, Pavel Nikl, and Peter Jarusek were the musicians. They were all very talented. Their movements were amazing and no matter the difficulty, they stayed in time with one another. The songs they chose to perform were Quartet No. 1 in B minor, Op. 50 by the composer Prokofiev, Quartet No. 11 in F minor, Op. 95 “Serioso” by Beethoven, and Quartet No. 5, Sz. 102 by Bartok. All these pieces were amazing both in difficulty and sound.…

    A Choral Tapestry

It seems that versatility was one of choir director Dr. Charles Clency’s focuses when he picked out the repertoire. The program of the event reads: “A Choral Tapestry. A blend of choral genres: mass, madrigal, oratorio, opera, musical theatre, pop, spirituals, gospel…” and the list goes on. There was versatility even within the choirs themselves. For instance, the first six songs were sung by the Choir of Lake County, but the first four pieces were sung in Latin, French, Russian, and Italian, with mezzo soprano Sheila Bondurant singing Carmen’s solo in Habanera, while the last two were excerpts from the musicals The Phantom of the Opera and Oklahoma. This is quite the contrast. I’ll admit, at first the concert was slow. This could be because of my own preconceived notions on how the concert was going to play out, or it could have been that my preconceived notions were true. The following group caught my attention a little bit better, which was the all-women’s choir who sang a dreamy French piece called Clair de Lune, which translates to “moonlight” in English. Notions of leaving pervaded my thoughts up until the Chamber Singers…

Sac State’s Ensemeble performed three songs these were: Summertime by George Gershwin with an arrangement by Carlos McCoy, Songomania by Rebeca Mauleon, and Rumba Urbana by Oscar Hernandez. Sac States ensemble had a much smaller group of individuals performing but the performance they gave didn’t lack in any way. Throughout the performance I noticed there was a lot of trumpet, and the piano was a lot faster in the song Summertime. It reminded me of salsa music, something you could dance to with a fast beat. In Songomania there was a lot of Piano, and Drums I loved when they performed this song because most of the instrument players got independent solos to show off their talents. Overall Sac States performance…

The conductor Mr. Scott Speck took the stage and gave a brief and intriguing introduction of what we were about to see. He conducted and directed the performance with a baton. The first performance lasted for about 20minutes and it was a good piece. What certainly had me so interested and fixated at the players, was the unison among them, as each of them played their different musical instrument. It was the prettiest thing I’ve seen in quite a long time. The view of them moving together and producing music pleasant to the ears, was amazing.…

Conclusively, this performance is one that I am glad I chose to attend. Ever since I was introduced to Jazz music, it has always had a special place in my heart. Choir Critique

To make up for the holiday concert I missed, I went to church on Sunday, Jan. 20 to critique the choir there. It was at Life Center in Tacoma, with the choir being made up of about 20 people; there were equal amounts of men and women singing. The service started at 10:30 a.m., with the first song, (which was more of a hymn) Bless the Lord Oh my Soul contemporarily sung by Matt Redman. The songs which were sung that day did have contemporary versions, but were sung usually acapella or with only a piano. There was one instance where the audience was expected to sing with the choir, too. What I noticed from the choir during this first song was that every single person was singing with pure emotion, naturally swaying with the beat of the song throughout. I could completely tell that they felt the rhythm of the song because they kept the tempo at a steady pace, but filled their voices with energy. The next song was The Only One being sung by a man named Anson Dawkins, who was the soloist. This song wasn’t considered as classical choral material, but Anson did an excellent job at keeping the same tone quality through the different ranges of the song; when the notes were starting to get a little high for his range, he didn’t force the notes out, but instead let them naturally flow through. Next, the choir sang We Wait by Don Moen, with Matt leading the song with the piano. When the choir broke into the five part harmony, however, the men were overpowering the women and could’ve listened better to improve their intonation. In other words, they were really sticking out among the other parts. Another song was Nothing but the Blood, also a hymn. In this song, the choir blended so well because everyone’s vowels matched. It made it easier to understand the text, too, because of that. One imperfection I heard was that at the end, everyone finished their note at different spots, making the ending sound a little sloppy.…

The song choice for this band seems very appropriate for the level of players in the ensemble. I also enjoyed the Christmas medley that they played with the concert being close to Christmas. The band had very good balance. They had a good foundation with the low brass and woodwinds. The upper woodwinds were not shrill sounding and blend very nicely into the foundation the lower instruments set for them. The rhythms were together and precise. They were able to switch between staccato and legato seamlessly.…

For my report, I attended a Senior Vocal Recital at Elmhurst College in the Irion Theatre. The performance started with Opera pieces and later included some contemporary, jazz and standard pieces. Though there was no orchestra, there was pianist, guitarist, vocal ensemble and gospel choir assisting in accompaniment. I stayed throughout the entire performance, including intermission, which gave me the chance to soak in the complete experience of the musical performance.…

The men’s choir preformed at the Hillcrest High school. They were the first to perform at the concert. Then came the women’s choir, then after that was the more expectance singers performed after the women’s choir. Each group had their own songs to preform but I’m going to talk about the one I performed in which was the men’s choir. I’m going to talk about the good and the bad with our sings. On Thursday April 25, 2013 , I attended a jazz vocal concert at the Music Concert Hall. The first vocal ensemble opened up the performance with a slow rhythmic song called Blue Skies. It began with vocals and I noticed a light auxiliary percussion and drum rhythm. Also, the bass guitarist used walking bass and the piano and electric guitar joined in as well. The first song also consisted of two soloist Regina and Chantel who took the front stage to show off their chops. After the solo performances they fell back into the vocal sections and finished off the song as a complete band. The second performance had a piano opening which led to vocals joining in at the same time as the rhythm section. This performance consisted of three separate solos by vocalist, and ended the song like the last one as a group. The third performance of the night was personally interesting to me. Dr. Buchholz mentioned it was originated from Brazil by Sergio Mendez called “Brazil 66” and it was going to be sang in Portuguese. In this performance the rhythm section was more uptempo joined by the choir. The first soloist was vocals by Jennifer which fell back into the group then a small piano solo was performed which was joined by the rhythm section and choir to conclude the song. The fourth performance was Java Jive, Manhattan Transfer. The guitar from the rhythm section started at the same time as the choir. But this time only the male vocalist started the song and then the female ones joined. The fist male soloist, James, of the night was in this song, who was joined by Jennifer for her solo performance. The fifth and final performance for the first vocal ensemble was the first one that included horns, consisting of a trumpet, sax, and trombone. This song was a Paul Simon original “Bridge over trouble water”. All the vocalist started together along with the rhythm section. A male soloist took center stage which was joined with the horns sections. At first I had a…

Last month, on Friday, January, 30, 2015, at 7:30 in the evening my friends and I attended a concert, Wind Symphony, in downtown Toronto. It was at the Edward Johnson Building McMilan Theatre, 80 Queens Park. The concert was conducted by the University of Toronto band and the conductor was Tony Gomes. The two musicians that played my instrument were Brian Burell, and Caleb Michalski. The layout is that there were clarinets in the front to the left and the flutes were at the front to the right. There were a lot of clarinets and flutes! Whereas, in our Beginner band class, the location is opposite. Also, behind the clarinets were the trumpets. In comparison, the trumpets weren't as many as clarinets because the tone and volume are much stronger and effective with less people. Beside the trumpet players were the trombone players. To the far right in the back were the euphoniums/baritones and tuba. There were 2 euphonium players and 1 tuba player. Lastly, all along the back of the stage were the percussionists. There were many different kinds of percussion such as tenor drums, sticks, harp, piano, and many more. The compositions of many instruments made the concert very harmonic.…

Upon first glance at the Guzman hall I was filled with anxiety as well as excitement as to what was to come. Prior to this semester I had not listened to any jazz music and I was unaware of any artists or songs. Therefore going to a jazz concert was a rare experience that I now cherish. When I first entered the hall I was greeted by a group of musicians called ‘The Stamps Jazz Quintet’, there were 4 musicians at the front of the hall and they were taking place. The musicians included Sam Hart who played the saxophone, Aidan Lombard who played the trumpet, Quinn Sengupta who was on the piano, Bob Bruya who played the bass and finally Marcelo Perez who was proficient at the drums.…

I felt that their presence too was very strong and noticeable in the performance. The singers actually made it a point to applaud the orchestra, gesturing acknowledgement and even giving the stage to them. I personally was very entertained by it, for there was a jazzy flare to their pieces which I thought was unique. The collaboration between the singers and the orchestra, definitely complemented each other and created the right tune.…

By attending the recital, I have gotten a step closer to being involved with the TCU Music department. Although I still intend pursue a Bachelors of Science in Physics with a Minor in Education, music has shaped my high school career, and I plan to have it be a large part of my college career as well. I have already signed up for a choir class next semester, and look forward to the moment when I get to stand on a TCU stage and sing, just as I watched Dr. San-ky Kim do so…

One of the great things about this performance was the new addition of-duos. These I really enjoyed because it seemed a whole lot easier to hear and dissect the music. The first song that i heard was the duo with two people on the piano. Immediately after the song began, I picked up on some familiar sounds to that of rag time. There was a simple right hand melody being played, which gave it a playful sound.…
