In the Great Sin by C.S. Lewis, one of the most treacherous
sin is discussed. This sin is Pride and the one which everyone in the world struggles with. Although most consider it a sin, it is a feeling that constantly drives people jealous and similar emotions which cause multiple problems including wars. Proud people are always trying to be the one on top and get wrapped up in the opinions of others about them. The idea of superiority is nicely depicted by the second son in the Parable of the Prodigal Son. The festive welcoming upset the second brother who didn’t seem to be worried about the well-being of his own brother. This is an illustration of pride because he believed that his actions to save his share made him superior and a better person. On the other hand, his brother, who wasted his inheritance understood what he had done and begged to live under his father’s roof as a slave. His reflection at the field made him realize that he doesn’t deserve to receive forgiveness and he was willing to move down his privileged class to forever pay for disgracing his father. According to the parable humans have to look beyond themselves and let go of their pride in order to look deep inside themselves and receive forgiveness from God. The moral of this parable is that man need to understand under who’s grace sustains him and that he has to humble himself for he is nothing compared to his glory.
