Sacramento Time Capsule
October 25, 2013

Dear City of Sacramento:

We are writing to you regarding what we believe should be included in a time capsule displaying what life is and was like in Sacramento. We have compiled a list of ten objects, the price of which does not exceed ten thousand dollars. We believe that each of these items hold a special place in the heart of each Sacramentan, and should thus be included in the time capsule. This is the list we have composed, in order of importance:
1) Sacramento Kings basketball jersey: When one thinks of Sacramento, the first thing that often comes to mind is our very own NBA team, the Sacramento Kings. The Kings are one aspect of this city that are uniquely Sacramentan, and are a sense of pride for the city of Sacramento. The Kings jersey we are planning to include in our time capsule also is a symbol of the long and arduous struggle we went through as a city to keep them from becoming the Seattle Sonics. The features of culture this corresponds to are styles of dress and values.
2) Crocker Art Museum Painting Reproduction (Thomas Hill): The Crocker Art Museum is a major art museum located in Sacramento. We chose to display a reproduction of Thomas Hill’s piece Yosemite. Thomas Hill is known for his depictions of California landscapes, and we believe that his piece Yosemite is a good symbol of California’s love for nature and natural parks. The features of culture this corresponds to are paintings, understanding of the natural world, and concept of beauty.
3) Picture of the Capitol building: More than anything, Sacramento is known for being the capitol of California, therefore, we believe it is only right that a picture of the capitol building be included in our time capsule. It also solidifies the fact that Sacramento is the political epicenter of California. The feature of culture this corresponds to is ideas about leadership.
4) Map of Sacramento (with waterways): Corresponds to understanding of the natural world and housing.

It is the year 2325 and hundreds of years beyond the time of dominance the United States of America. This once super power is now just part of the North American Empire. While doing and archeological dig in the mid eastern area of the empire we discovered a time capsule from the 1960s. This time capsule had five things that were enclosed represented very important parts of that decade to the American people. Those five things were a Moon rock, an audio recording of Dr. Martin Luther King’s “I Have a Dream Speech”, a banner that read “Women’s Liberation”, an LSD Drop, and the dress…

Urbanism at its eclectic finest exists in the city of San Francisco. The name itself brings to mind its many sociocultural icons. The Golden Gate Bridge, cable cars, Fisherman’s Wharf, Chinatown, and Alcatraz Island are unique to San Francisco yet do not define the city. From a tiny missionary village to wild west frontier town to love-ins and gay pride to world-class city characterize San Francisco as a distinctive metropolis. Environmentally, San Francisco is far from ideal. At the tip of the peninsula on San Francisco Bay, surrounded on three sides by water, San Francisco is windy most of the time. It has moderately cool temperatures year round and is plagued by dense fog, steep hills, and earthquakes. In spite of this San Francisco has…

For over fifty years now the City of Angels, Los Angeles, has been home to one of the most historical and successful franchises in the National Basketball Association (NBA). With so many accomplishments encompassed in its sixty-plus year journey, the story of the Los Angeles Lakers is indeed a colorful one. Sporting the infamous purple and gold, the Los Angeles Lakers have become the second most decorated team in the NBA with a total of sixteen national championships to date; just one behind that other team out in Boston. Some of the greatest players to ever set foot on a court have donned a Laker jersey; and along with these legends, have come some of the greatest games in NBA history. Kobe Bryant, a future Hall of Famer and the face of today’s franchise, is set to be another remarkable addition to the Laker legacy. There is no question then, why high expectations fill the minds of millions of Laker fans every year. See, in Los Angeles, anything less than a national championship is considered a losing season, and why not? After all, the Lakers have had a winning reputation from the very start.…

The landscape also changed, indeed, when ships transporting goods and sailors arrived in California, they were then left by the sailors who want to tempt their luck in mines. The SF’s harbor became then a real cemetery with boats. Hundreds of checkmates were visible with the abandoned boats, which became afterward docks, shops, inns and hotels… (The principle of recycling was discovered!).…

    1. Two historical events that I observed in the museum were the California Gold Rush and The Signing of the California Land Claims Act. The California Gold Rush of 1849 brought large numbers of new immigrants from Mexico, Central American and South America to California. The presence of gold made California tremendously valuable to the United States. The Gold Rush funded money for the union to buy supplies and fire arms for its military. The Gold Rush stood out to me because of all the back ground information and analyzing we did in class and its importance in both Mexican and American History. The second event I observed was the signing of the California Land Claims Act, after the Mexican American War, Mexican American land owners in United States territory began to lose their land at an alarming pace. Either through fraud or force, Mexicans living in United States regions were often stripped of their rights to their land. This act really stuck me on how unfair our government was to our own people and how the government can abuse its power.…
