Sacrementum Caritatis's 'Paragraph 70'
Paragraph 70 is written with the theme life lies in the Eucharist. The eating of the body and blood of Christ is what gives eternal life. It is because our eternal life coming from the Eucharist that the purpose of the Christian life is made. This is why the Eucharist is referred to as the source and summit, “The Eucharistic Celebration appears in all its power as the source and summit of the Church’s life, since it expresses at once both the origin and the fulfilment of the new and definitive worship of God” (Sacrementum Caritatis Paragraph 70). Paragraph 71 is written with the purpose to show that the Eucharist fulfills the need to worship God. All of our heart should be turned towards God and it is often difficult to do as humans.

We are able to grow in worship of God by receiving the Eucharist. This is seen as the Eucharist replenishes Baptism, “The eucharistic sacrifice nourishes and increases within us all that we have already received at Baptism, with its call of happiness” (Sacrementum Caritatis Paragraph 79). We are also affected by the Eucharist in our everyday life by receiving inspiration from the strength of the sacrament. This enables us to have strength to live out our vocations to the fullest. Paragraph 80 focuses on the relationship between the Eucharist and the priesthood. The purpose of the priesthood is to take up Christ’s cross and be united with the Eucharist. The Eucharist must be the priority of the priest, “He is called to seek god tirelessly, while remaining attuned to the concerns of his brothers and sisters. An intense spiritual life will enable him to enter more deeply into common with the Lord” (Sacrementum Caritatis Paragraph 80). Paragraph 81 is about the Eucharist and the consecrated life. What I found to be important was the displaying of the purpose of the consecrated life. Service is extremely important in this life, but the ultimate purpose is, “contemplation of things diving and constant union with God in prayer” (Sacrementum Caritatis Paragraph 81).
