“I want my life.” At first, it looked as though John was going to admit to witchcraft to save his life. However, in a rather dramatic way, he changes his mind at the last moment. “I can. And there’s your first marvel, that I can. You have made your magic now, for now I do think I see some shred of goodness in John Proctor. Not enough to weave a banner with, but white enough to keep it from such dogs. Give them no tear! Tears pleasure them! Show honor now, show a stony heart and sink them with it!” At the climax of the play, John Proctor decides to hang in honesty instead of living in lies. Despite his mistakes and shortcomings, this shows Proctor’s character is of an honest man. Of the three, Proctor could be considered the best example of integrity despite pressure to do otherwise.
