Safe Haven

Katie, a mysterious 27-year-old woman, moves to Southport, North Carolina. She maintains privacy at an extreme level, starts working at a restaurant named Ivan's, and lives an isolated life without involving herself in anything social. It is apparent that she is hiding a secret. She becomes friends with her neighbor, a woman in her thirties named Jo.
Katie regularly goes shopping at a store and the owner of the store, Alex, becomes attracted to her. Alex is a widower with two children, Josh and Kristen. Katie becomes instantly attached with the little Kristen, who hasn't started school yet and accompanies her father to the store. One day, Josh almost drowns while fishing, and while Alex rescues him, Katie comforts Kristen. Following this incident, Katie becomes friendlier with Alex, and eventually, she invites him to dinner at her house. They soon come to realize that they love each other, and Alex, who had once been in the army, guesses Katie's secret. Katie, understanding that Alex has come to guess about her secret, reveals it to him, saying that she is married to a man named Kevin. Her real name is Erin. Kevin, who is a policeman, physically abused her, and thus, she was forced to flee from her house, taking a new identity. Alex promises to protect her secret, and soon, their love starts growing deeper.
On the other hand, Kevin is furious at Katie because she has run away from him. He starts searching for Katie, and finally is able to locate where she lives after he comes to know what identity she is using. He arrives in Southport, and sees Katie. That evening, Katie is in Alex's home taking care of the children, as Alex was away from home due to some work. Kevin sets Alex's house on fire, fortunately Katie manages to escape with Josh and Kristen. She has a fight with Kevin, giving the children time to escape. Alex arrives in time and takes the children to Katie's home, and returns to his burning house and attacks Kevin. Kevin escapes from Alex and drives towards Katie's house. After Katie comes to know that Alex left the children in her house, she becomes terrified; she knows Kevin will go to her house to hunt her, and thus the children's lives are in danger. As they reach Katie's house, Kevin attacks Alex with a crowbar. Katie, however, kills Kevin with a gun.
Alex recovers in a hospital and soon, from the remains of the burnt house, a safe is recovered. Alex hands Katie a letter from the safe. Katie goes back to her little cottage and decides to meet her neighbor, friend and supporter, Jo. However, she is shocked to see Jo's house in such a state that gives a hint that the house has never been lived in. Startled, she comes to think that Jo was completely her imagination. Shocked, she starts reading the letter Alex handed her. It is a letter written by Alex's late wife, Carly. And there, it is written that her Carly's friends used to call her Jo. Katie realizes that Jo wasn't her imagination, but it was Carly's spirit. She finishes reading the letter, which Carly wrote to the woman with whom her husband would fall in love, requesting the woman, that is, Katie, to always take care of Alex and the children.

The older Kevin’s narration both expands on the situation that we are watching and reflects on it through knowledge that he’s gained in the years since. It helps to offer a deeper level of depth than would be expected from a show with such a young cast. Kevin’s best friend Paul is the poster boy for the stereotypical nerd: a Jewish-American lanky young man with low self-confidence and what he claims to be an allergy to just about everything as revealed in the Pilot where he has to eat plain white bread at dinner with the Arnold’s due to being allergic to both meatloaf and salad. Winnie Cooper, Kevin’s constant love interest throughout the show, Winnie Cooper is depicted as being the epitome of innocence. In Kevin’s eyes, which are certainly biased, she is the perfect woman and no matter how many girls he dates throughout the series run, he constantly finds himself getting back with her. Kevin’s father Jack is a Korean War vet who now works as a management job for Norcom, a defense contracting company who Kevin’s sister Karen claims on a couple occasions that they manufacture micro weapons much to her disdain. Karen starts as a hippie in the beginning of the show and continues to mature eventually enrolling in College(“Growing Up” S4:E1). Kevin’s mom Norma starts out in a typical housewife role…

To begin with, Kate Morrison is plagued by the guilt of her bother, Matt’s broken dreams. As a consequence, the guilt causes many emotional problems in her life. For instance, the constant mental pressures of guilt causes Kate’s “crisis” during one of her zoology lectures. “Because if things had turned out differently, it would have been Matt standing in front of them” (Lawson, pg. 200). During a lecture, Kate has a flashback about a childhood visit to the ponds with Matt. It is clear that Kate feels guilty for leaving Matt, who was her idol as well as her brother, behind. He taught her not only to see nature but to observe and understand it; and Kate feels that it is injustice that she should be teaching others when Matt taught her “everything” she knows. Furthermore, Katie is always in an emotional battle with her own mind due to the guilt she felt for Matt’s situation. “I had betrayed him, that was how I felt” (Lawson, pg. 201). Even though she knows Matt had caused his own demise, deep inside her mind, she feels that it was her own fault. This feeling causes her to fight with herself. Her situation shows that Kate could never come to terms with what had happened to her family and what had become of the Morrison dream. Finally, Kate’s guilt causes her to lose communication with Matt, which hurts their relationship. “What are you actually researching Kate? I don’t think you’ve ever said” (Lawson, pg. 274). It is plainly obvious that Matt is interested in…

    Land of Refuge

1.) “Throughout its history, the US has been a land of refuge and opportunity for immigrants.” Assess the validity of this statement in view of the experience of the Irish in the 19th century urban northeast.Between the years of 1830 and 1860, immigration from many Europeans countries very much shows that the United States has been a land of refuge and opportunity for immigrants. Because of the high rate of immigrants, looking for refuge from the problems of their homeland, the population of the United States shot up by about six million. The flow of immigrants, choked off by wars in Europe in the first three decades of the nineteenth century, revived in the 1830s. The foreign-born population was vastly made up of immigrants from Ireland. In 1850, the Irish constituted approximately 45 percent of the foreign-born Americans. The mass migration out of their homeland was partly because of the oppression and the unpopularity of the English rule. But the factor that impacted the most was the greatest disaster in Ireland’s history: the Potato Famine. The entire country depended on the potato crop economically and also to feed the population. But between 1845 and 1849, the catastrophic failure of the vital crop caused the devastation of the country. Looking for safety and refuge from this terrible disaster, more than 1.5 million Irish fled to the safe lands of the United States. They fled to the safety of the urban northeast. Without practically any money, unlike the German immigrants, the Irish immigrants settled in the eastern cities to fill them with unskilled labor. The urban northeast gave them, mostly young and single women, opportunities of factory and domestic work. Moving rom the southern counties of Ireland, where there were little to no opportunities and an excess of devastation, to the urban northeast of the United States of America, where opportunities of work were in abundance, the immigrants of Ireland, looking for refuge and opportunity, created a…
