The current legislation, guidelines, policies and procedures for safeguarding children and young people includes the following.

The Children Act 1989 (legislation) – this act focus on safeguarding children and the duties of local authorities. It identifies the responsibility of parents and anyone working with children to ensure the safety and welfare of the child is paramount. Local Authority has a ‘duty to investigate when there is a reasonable cause to suspect that a child is suffering or likely to suffer significant harm.

The Every Child Matters Guidelines – Was established after the Laming Report criticised the way in which the Victoria Climbie case was handled.
This report made recommendations to overhaul child protection in the UK. The Children Act 2004 formed the legal framework so that these recommendations became legal requirements. This includes the requirement for:
• Services to work more closely together, forming an integrated service.
• Central database containing all children and whether they are known to different services.
• Independent children’s commissioner for England to protects children and young peoples rights in the UK
• Children and families board chaired by a senior government minister
• Ofsted will set a framework which will monitor childrens services

The document ‘Working together to Safeguard Children 2006’ - sets out the duties of organisations and how they must work together to safeguard children and young people.

The United Nations Convention on Rights of the Child (1989) –(UNCRC) is a human rights treaty which sets out the rights of all children to be treated equally. It sets out the rights of every child under the age o 18 is entitled to. These include the full range of human rights - civil, cultural, economic, social, and political.
It ensures that children have the right to be safe and looked after, children have the right to be protected from all forms of physical or mental violence, injury or abuse,
