An account of a voyage and of an arrival of four Mississippi Savages to France was translated by Mercure de France. This account, written by Ellis and Steen is significant because of the profound circumstances in which France and the rest of Europe were in during this time period. France’s strategy towards the Natives in North America, were much different from the strategies Spain and the English were employing. The French wanted to bring these Natives to their land to amaze them with beauty and to proclaim the power and greatness of their king.…
Thirty years after hearing a 10 year old playmate casually announce: "Daddy and Roger and 'em shot 'em a nigger," Tyson examines the racial conflict and riots that took place in the spring of 1970 in Oxford, North Carolina, while also looking at the culture that allowed such an event to take place and that allowed Robert and Roger Teel to be acquitted of both murder and manslaughter charges. The same tensions of racial conflict and desegregation that existed in Oxford were a reflection of those being felt throughout North Carolina and the rest of the South. Blood Done Sign My Name explores the motivation behind Marrow’s death and the riots afterwards.…
While being one of the most notorious towns of the old west, Bodies crime rate didn’t seem to disturb the old, young, weak, or women as they have done so in major cities today. Over a five year period, McGrath stated, a ratio of 84 Robberies per 100,000 inhabitants per year occurred during the flourishing years of 1878-1882, while the United States as a whole was 243. He mentioned that the crime rate of burglary and robbery was deterred by the fact that most citizens, in Bodie, where always armed and without hesitation of shooting the would-be robber. One area of crime Bodie far surpassed that of the 1980’s major cities was murder. While the murder rate of Bodie was 116, compared to the national average in 1980 of 10.2, the people involved were the young, adventurous, single males who would adhere to a code of conduct that quit frequently required them to fight, even if, of perhaps especially if, it could mean death (Par 14). Even with an astronomically high murder rate, Bodie only convicted one man of murder. McGrath openly lays out robust arguments to contradict the typical myth of the old west being this lawless, crime rampant fragment of our history a number of us have come to believe.…
My observation is based on the television mini-series ‘Hatfields and Mccoys’. This is a true story of two families in the late 1800s that had animosity between each other and how their animosity led to many deaths, a battle, and eventually a spot in history. Both sides take pride in their family and both families stand up for what they believe to be right. In the beginning I thought they were all very close knit and I liked that about their families. Their feud began when the patriarch of both families were off at war and Devil Anse Hatfield left the war in the middle of the night after trying to convince Randall McCoy to come with him. McCoy, doing the honorable…
‘In this coming of age story, Charlie must question his conventional notions of what is right and wrong as he navigates small town morality, racism and hypocrisy.’…
Undoubtedly these two trials have many similarities despite one of the trials being mainly a focal point for achievement in the literary world. An identical example between these trials are the historical culture in abundance with many of the families included in the trial, an example being the Ewells compare to be utterly consistent with the two young prosecutors in the way they live their life. Another of these many similarities includes the bizarre assumption by the jury that the accused were already virtually guilty before the trial had even begun due to the mainstream’s coarse view of African Americans and how African Americans are nothing better than a common house animal, punished at the dominant being’s will. This point is shown, beyond doubt, when one of the women prosecuting the Scottsboro Boys, Ruby Bates admits that neither herself nor her friend Victoria Price were every raped in anyway by any of the nine accused African Americans. Even after this incriminating confession, the series of trials continue .…
This story is about a group of kids that are called Greasers, because they live on the East side of town, which is the lower income part of the city. They all slick back their hair with grease, and that's where the name Greasers came from. Ponyboy Curtis is the main character in this story, and he has 2 brothers, one named Darry, and the other named Sodapop. One night Johnny and Ponyboy are out at the park, and a group of Socs, the nickname for Rich Kids, came by and started beating them up. One of them stuffed Ponyboy's face into the fountain and tried to drown him, so Johnny stabbed him before he killed Ponyboy. The boy that he stabbed died, and so they went to a friend who gave them money and a gun to run away with. They ran away to an abandoned church, and one day Dallas, the friend who gave them the supplies came by and took them out to lunch, and when they returned the church was one fire. Johnny and Pony saved the kids inside, and a piece of wood fell on Johnny and he broke his back. He died in the hospital a few days later, and Dallas couldn't take it so he robbed a grocery store and took out an unloaded gun when the police came, so they shot and killed him. Exposition: The gang is introduced and the…
If an individual lives in an immoral or ruthless community, they are subjected to immoral and ruthless actions. One may think a community is just a place where one resides but it is much bigger than that, it’s a second family. It was stated that “The basketball court is a strange patch of neutral ground, a meeting place for every element of a neighborhood cohort of young men…We were all enclosed by the same fence, bumping into one another, fighting, celebrating. Showing one another our best and worst, revealing ourselves—even our cruelty and crimes—as if that fence had created a circle of trust. A brotherhood” (pg.45). The streets can teach one various life skills that a parent cannot, especially in a rough neighborhood in the heart of Maryland. The author Wes and his family moved into his grandparents’ home and the same rules that applied to his mother applied to him. “… My grandparents figured if these rules had helped their children successfully navigate the world, they would work on their grandkids too” (pg.42) states the author Wes as he discussed how he had to be in before the street light would come on. His family was sterner on him and his sister because they wanted what was best for them. They lived in the nicest community and went to the nicest white school for the reason that their mom wants her kids to stay away from all the trouble and how bad Harlem had changed since she left. Not saying the other Wes’…
The scare of Ponyboy getting jumped and threatened, and the murder of Bob show the violence that results from the hate and spite of divided groups. In the story there many negative examples and consequences from the gang life. The gangs were small groups, within the community in which bad choices were made out of loyalty to the group, and to the gang as a whole. All member of the gangs seemed to have great love for one another, and would sacrifice for each other, but the hatred they shared caused so much sadness and pain within the…
This nightmare began in the early morning of July 23, 1999. Forty seven men and women were arrested in the biggest drug bust in Swisher County’s history. They were rousted from their beds before dawn and taken to jail. Thirty nine of those arrested were black. The following eight were either Whites or Hispanics who had ties to this black community. From the beginning, the families of those apprehended believed that the drug bust was a racial thing. They just could not prove it, at least not yet.…
The two gangs in our story are the Greasers which come from the economically struggling east side while the socs their rival gang come from the economically thriving west side. In chapter 1 Ponyboy explains his life how his parents died in a car accident and how he lives with his 2 brothers Sodapop and Darry he then goes on to state the current relationship of the gang how they are in a constant gang war. After explaining he is shown walking down the street and he states that he is in danger because he is labeled by society as a “Greaser” because he was walking on the east side. As if foreshadowing what was going to happen a car with four socs attacked ponyboy which then turned into a full out gang…
“Ponyboy, listen don’t get tough. You’re not like the rest of us and don’t try to be…”-Two-bit Matthews Page 171. The Outsiders is a novel written by S.E Hinton in the 1960’s, the novel is based on a true story. The story is about Ponyboy, a teenager that belongs in the gang called Greasers. There is another gang that opposes the Greasers called the Socs. The two gangs live in two sides of Oklahoma, the Greasers being in the east, and the Socs being in the west. The Socs and the Greasers often fight each other. To society, the Greasers are low class and cause trouble, while the Socs are rich and can do no harm. Ponyboy dramatically changes throughout the novel, he starts to wonder if he should model himself to the members of his gang or follow his own path. There are three reasons to support my thesis statement.…
It was only several weeks ago that a daring incident happened to me that could have impacted me for the rest of my life. Hanging with the wrong crowd and making with the wrong decision could have changed my life forever. That decision was the choice I made to hang with the gangs. In this essay you will find out how getting arrested for hanging out with the wrong people affected me and how gangs’ violence affects today’s society in the United States.…
Crime is something that our society had had to deal with since the term “law” was coined. There are murders, robberies, and identity theft that happen everyday. When we think of crime, you could possibly imagine a schizophrenic man, or a jealous women who has a cheating husband. At times, crime is seen as an unorganized, and just randomly spout together process. But, in the standards of the 1920s, this was not the case. Many of mobsters, street gangs, and gangsters ruled the world behind the scenes, creating a cartel of illegal products and murder. A great amount of people may believe that these things never really happened, it all just stories and media. But mobsters such as Al Capone and Lucky Luciano caused destruction and controlled America like a puppet. In the novel, “The Great Gatsby”, the themes and actions of illegal crime is put into a bright spotlight. It shows how organized crime influenced America during the alcohol porhibition.…
