Do you believe in witches? Well the people of Salem did which ended up killing around 20 people and left the early town in hysteria. Whether you believe the tails of the witch trials of Salem or believe it was true however the causes show that, most likely, the trials were not work of witches or any magic at all. The first cause is what most people the majority of experts agree on which is the girls who started the hysteria, Abigail Williams and Betty Paris, were faking their fits. This could have been for a number of reasons such as boredom, prejudice, and much more. They could have been bored of their small town lives ad tried to make interesting. This makes sense given their ages. One may argue this would
have been figured out quicker however the hysteria that spread through the village was quick and swift so even if they did the damage was already done. A more scientific point could have been Ergot. Ergot is a type of fungus that grows on corn and rye which causes almost the exact symptoms the girls were experiencing. It fits almost perfectly with the witch crisis because in harvests that were plentiful there were more accusations and in drought there were less accusations. The early Americans also did not know of Ergot making it more likely this crisis was just the work of the fungus. The final point could have been simply paranormal activity. Many people believe in ghosts so is it too far fetched that the people of Salem were being possessed. The alleged symptoms of being are possessed fit like a glove with the fits that were happening. The mass hysteria could have been due to paranormal activity because it is truly frightening. However, if this is a true theory what would haunt the people of Salem this badly. Well many paranormal experts have a simple answer. Indians. The indians were the enemies of the early Puritans so they could have very well haunted Salem. The true meaning behind the Salem witch trials might forever be unknown but its fun the think. Many people today think of children's games when the word Witch is said but it's not as far fetched as many people think. Since no light has been made to the massacre we have to believe that witches are the cause which unfortunately is highly unlikely. So after reading this, do you believe in witches?
