Salem Witch Trials and Innocent People
After studying Author Millers play, The Crucible, I have come to the conclusion that the three people most to blame for the witch hysteria and the subsequent death of innocent people are Abigail, Danforth, and Reverend Paris each of these people, in some way cause harm to blameless people, and I will in this essay, explain what these people, knowingly and unknowingly did not contribute to the death of the innocent people hanged as witches in Salem Village in 1962.
Abigail was most responsible for the Salem witch hysteria. She had tons of different opportunities to have explained why there was dancing in the woods. In addition Abigail really had no feelings for anyone else and what would happen to them all she cared about was herself and making sure she stayed protected. The last reason why I think Abigail was responsible is because she would pretend that they were choking her. She got many people to believe it was actually happening.
Danforth was also responsible for the tragedy. He only wanted to believe that everyone accused was guilty and refused to want to believe anything else. Another reason he is to blame is because Danforth was very cruel, he would hang anyone who is or was accused of witchcraft, and doesn’t confess. My final reason why I think that he is responsible as well is because he had no patience for anyone or anything.
Lastly, Reverend Paris is responsible for the hanging of innocent people as witches. Reverend Paris caught Abigail dancing in the woods but told he it would be a harm to his position in the town, so she had to be the one to take care of it. He made it to where the court wouldn’t hear the truth about what he saw in the woods because if the court did hear the truth it would set all the innocent people free. But the biggest reason was he was covering up his household name so it led to many innocent deaths.
