Matilda Cook, or Mattie, is a 14 year old girl who is stuck in a yellow fever epidemic in Philadelphia. Thousands died after only a month, and it wasn't long before her mother got it and sent her away to the country. All did not go well on the way there. Her grandfather got sick, prohibiting them from moving to the fever-free country land. Mattie was left to help keep him alive. Shortly after, Mattie fell ill and woke in a huge hospital surrounded by other yellow fever victims. Fortunately, her grandfather survived. However, this was only the very beginning of Mattie’s struggle to stay alive.…
Given that there were a large number of healthy carriers, besides Mallon, none of whom were taken into custody as she was, this measure seems extreme . The argument for her continued quarantine was that, when given freedom from her first quarantine, Mallon continued to transmit the infection through cooking. In Leavitt’s discussion of Mallon’s experience, however, she points out that the doctors and public health officials in charge of Mallon’s quarantine were so focused on the science that they forgot the social aspects. They searched for a cure but didn’t try to work with her or teach her . If Mallon had been educated on preventative measures and trained in a new profession without the risk of transmission that cooking had, she would no longer have been a threat to public health outside of quarantine.…
Food that is mishandled can lead to foodborne illness. While the United States has one of the safest food supplies in the world, preventing foodborne illness remains a major public health challenge. Often when you purchase foods from the grocery store or the food market, you have to check all the expiration dates. When a food is expired, they tend to give you a sign that the food is no good. For example, when you go to the store and shop for bread, you have to check the expiration date. If you purchase bread when the date on the bread is expired, the bread will mold within in the next three days or so. The same situation with the expiration dates is for meat as well.…

Our local community would require psychological, social and financial support. There would be a possibility of the main bread winner having passed away or having lost money due to being away from work for long periods of time. Medical bills would put a financial strain on families. Local government would need to implement education programs to ensure reduced infection rates and curb any further fear and prejudicial behavior from the community. There would be an increased strain on local governmental finances as many more families would require assistance. Many charitable groups would find an increase request for assistance. The time to recover from such a dramatic infection would take many years to recover…
Imagine getting a call from your child’s school telling you your child has a fever. Like most parents you would probably give your child some Tylenol and let them sleep it off. One mother did just that. Rebecca Hendricks received that call from her daughter's school around 2:30 p.m. in December of last year. The school nurse called to report Scarlett Anne had a temperature and needed to be picked up from school. Scarlett’s mother Mrs. Hendricks then brought her 5-year-old home, gave her Tylenol, fixed her a bowel of hot soup and let her rest on the couch. Within two days, Scarlett Anne seemed to be improving. She ate cereal for breakfast, then curled up on the couch with her mother to watch cartoons. Within half an hour Scarlett Anne was asleep. While asleep her mother became concerned by her labored breathing, her mother then woke her up, dressed her in pajamas, and rushed her to the emergency room. Three and half hours later, the little girl with beautiful blue eyes was dead. The CDC estimates that up to 20% of the population gets sick from the flu each year. Of that percent indicated only 40% are regularly vaccinated against the flu. Sadly, Scarlet Anne did not receive a vaccine that could have saved her life.…
In the beginning of the outbreak of influenza know as “the Spanish flu,” Americans were willing to accept public health officials guidance in the early weeks of the crisis. Most looked at the public health officials as hope and a cure to the sickness. As months passed, these officials were not successful in containing the flu. Americans had grown impatient and resistant against their help toward the public.…
The way that the guests were infected at the party was infected food and this was because the salmonella has not been killed by the heat of the cooking.…
One of the major factors that contribute to numerous virus outbreaks is the insufficient amount of hygiene. Due to the lack of hygiene, the instability of the virus has been constantly spreading and has progressed to the point of being uncontrollable. The author, Richard Preston, writes, “Apparently the medical staff had been giving patients injections with dirty needles” (Preston 98), which is an example in relation to the lack of sanitation. This illustrates how the medical staff…
During the latter part of the year in Massachusetts, 1918, all hell broke loose. Jane Brox, the author of the devastating essay “Influenza 1918,” describes the influenza that happened in her hometown before she was born as she states “the flu cut right through, spreading ahead of its own rumors, passing on a handshake and on the wind and with the lightest kiss.” (Brox 80). The flu was airborne and unstoppable. Deadly, the small hospitals began to fill up with patients sickened and contaminated with the virus more and more each day, the townspeople were scared for their lives, doctors were not even recording the names of the deceased anymore because there were so many victims, gauze masks used to help prevent the contamination sold out from every store, they did nothing. Chaos! Everyone was on their own, praying to God that they would not catch the virus each and every time they took a step outside and also every time they put something to their mouth. According to the documentary provided by the American Experience program, “It was the worst epidemic this country has ever known. It killed more Americans than all the wars this century—combined.” (“Influenza 1918” 1). Though this epidemic seemed to be one of the biggest tragedies that America has seen since the Civil War, the majority of Americans simply are not aware of the Influenza of 1918 because despite the fact that the epidemic was in the collective consciousness of the nation in 1918 like World War I, an event that the majority of Americans today are aware of, the epidemic was experienced individually and therefore not taught in grade-school textbooks, the war at the time seemed to be more important in the country’s eyes, and that America simply just does not support it.…
The time in America from 1865 to 1877 was known as the Reconstruction period. President Lincoln had been assassinated by John Wilkes Booth, but prior to that, he had given the Emancipation Proclamation. This meant all of the slaves in the South were free American Citizens. However, his successor Andrew Johnson was a Southern Democrat who had sympathy for the South. When he took his role in office, the South was almost completely off the hook.…
The community really did not care too much about a sick individual either, and those that did try and help the sick really had no medical background at all. Even if someone would catch the disease early during its early stages they were also hopeless because the doctors just did not care nor did they want to touch a sick patient. People also left the city all together leaving behind families and loved ones. This is very selfish you might say, but put yourself in a healthy persons shoes during this time. You wouldn’t try getting the heck out of there too? I know that I would be.…
I never knew what a struggle it would be to understand an emerging, deadly, unknown illness. It shocked me to watch the constant roadblocks arise, mainly concerning minimal cooperation. People who showed suspecting symptoms were reluctant to receive help or provide information to help others. The man who became known as Patient X created confusion as to how it was spread sporadically across the country, popping up in several states hundreds of miles away. Attempting to gain funding for biological and sociological research was constantly being shut down or ignored by the government. Once the CDC had a logical proposal, the political affiliates and oppressors would reject their notions. Nobody else seemed to want to recognize this mystery as a serious epidemic.…
