He is also known for the execution of Goliad, which was when he massacred James Fannin and his troops. When Santa Anna and his men defeated the texans at the Alamo, they just keep claiming land in Texas, but on one fateful night in San Jacinto, Houston and his men did a surprise attack on Santa Anna and his troops. This battle is known as the battle of San Jacinto, also it's the end of the fighting with Mexico. The Texans also captured Santa Anna after he ran away and dressed like a random mexican soldier. He tried to ride out on a fellow man’s horse and a man caught him cause Santa Anna's’ horse gave out.Once the Texans captured Santa Anna they wanted to kill him, but Sam Houston decided not to kill him and he had given him the choice of being killed or signing a treaty to say Texas was independent. Of course,…
Then began the Battle of San Jacinto, where Juan Seguin and his crew, along with Sam Houston, Jim Bowie, and other soldiers, defeated Santa Anna and his crewmates. When they had done that they made him go back across the Rio Grande back to his hometown, which was Juan Seguin’s hometown also.…
During the Mexican-American War, he raised and commanded a company and joined the Fourth Regiment, Illinois Volunteer Infantry. Harris was subsequently elected major of the regiment. Whilst absent and with the US Army, Harris was elected a member of the State senate in 1846. He was presented with a sword by the State of Illinois for gallantry at the Battle of Cerro Gordo, Mexico. And that's what I realized about…
Davy Crockett was the great defender of the Alamo during the Alamo fight against Mexico. He had the most accurate aim you will ever see in the world. He named the rifle he used in the Alamo. He named the rifle “Old Betsy” and it was his favorite rifle he had ever used. In the early life of Davy Crockett he led a dozen of Tennessee into San Antonio. A few days before Travis came to the town. Davy Crockett trained and practiced for years with his coach. His coach was Jacob Silver and they trained every day from that day to the next. He also had a rifle that he named “Old Betsy” witch was his favorite rifle he ever had. Today that's what we have to remember about him. But Davy Crockett was mostly remembered for defending the Alamo he fought a…
When Dr. King was 25, he decided to follow in his father’s footsteps and accept an offer to become the pastor of Dexter Avenue Baptist Church in Montgomery. During King’s tenure at Dexter, the leading political activists in Montgomery formed the Montgomery Improvement Association (MIA) to protest the arrest of Rosa Parks, an influential political figure and important NAACP official. Rosa Parks is now remembered today for sitting at the front of a public bus, sectioned for “whites-only”, and refusing to move. This famous and well known example of political activism inspired King and the MIA to lead a boycott on public bus transportation in Montgomery, the first major example of King participating in political activism. With the important encouragement…
Larger than life itself, James Bowie has inspired many legends. Bowie was born in Kentucky on April 10, 1796. Throughout his upbringing, Bowie was said to ride wild horses, alligators, and trap bears. Bowie enlisted in the War of 1812, although he was recruited too late to see any action on the warfront. Soon he was back in his childhood home, Louisiana, and he continued business as usual. Later on Bowie teamed up with his brother and Jean Lafayette in the slave smuggling business. In the 1820s Jim Bowie and his brothers made a less negative move and set up the first steam-powered mill in Louisiana. His achievement of being a soldier, marketer and landowner would be enough to make sure he wasn’t forgotten; but this isn’t even the tip of the iceberg of Jim Bowie.…

They are many heroes that we have to thank in American History for making our country what it is today. We are a country made of freedom and believe in personal rights. But all these rights did not come without fighting to keep our freedom. There were many battles fought and many battles won for this freedom. Texas in particular was a battlefield for Texas’ independence against Mexico. Lorenzo de Zavala was the Republic of Texas’ first vice president, when Texas had first won its independence from Mexico at the Battle of San Jacinto and became a republic of its own. It wasn’t until later when Texas became a part of the United States, unfortunately De Zavala would not be around to see this dream come true.…
There were many brave men and women heros during the 1800’s like the men who fought in the Alamo and died fighting to protect the Alamo since they were way outnumbered by the Mexicans by more than one thousand soldiers. The last one alive defending the Alamo was Davy Crockett and chose to die over becoming a Mexican soldier. After the Alamo was defeated Sam started falling back to settle a camp to surprise attack the Mexicans because Sam Houston and his soldiers were hidden so well. And of all of these Texas heros I think that Sam Houston is the most heroic and brave hero of Texas during the 1800’s for defending and fighting to get Texas independence from Mexico just like Mexico had fought to be independent from Spain (which has nothing to do with Sam Houston but is an interesting fact).…
Davy Crockett, the best shooter in Texas, and the last defender of the alamo will always be remembered in history as one of the nation's…
Texas history, as we learned about it in text books, has only told half of the story of Texas Independence. Every school child learns the story of the Alamo and how the brave souls paid with their lives for our freedom. What the historians failed to mention was all of the patriots who were involved, leading up to the Alamo and those who fought after. One of these patriots was Juan Sequin, who ended up paying for his patriotism with banishment, and being marked a traitor. It would be many years after his death before the full story of what this man, and others, actually achieved.…
Sam houston helped Texas be a state in the United States? Did you know that Sam Houston…
San Jacinto is known as the birthplace of Texas freedom. San Jacinto is considered one of the world's definitive fights. Sam Houston and his battered band of 910 pioneers steered Antonio Lopez de Santa Anna, President, and Dictator of Mexico and so-called "Napoleon of the West," with his glad armed force, and changed the guide of North America. This story that has excited Texans for over a century. An account of high courage and initiative; of horrid hardship, disaster and sentiment. On April 21, 1836, this battle had permanently engraved the names of Texas loyalists on history's look of American immortals. Although the battle only lasted twenty minutes, the outcome had about a six-year long affect (Kemp). At the…
He was born in a small town called Deniso in western Texas in the year 1890 (Hargrove 22).Then he and his family moved to a railroad town called Abilene in the state of Kansas. Here Dwight Eisenhower grew upwith his 13 other family members. (Hargrove 19). Dwight David Eisenhower is one of Americas greatest heroes with his military career to his two terms as President of the United States. Dwight Eisenhower had many accomplishments to and from West Point through World War One. Ike Eisenhower wanted to serve his country in any way he could. He found the idea of being a sailor in the U.S Navy intriguing, but when he later applied for entering he found that he was too old at the age of 20. Then after studying hard Eisenhower was accepted atthe…
Andrew Jackson was the most admired president of his time. Although he was extremely contradictory, he attained being seen as a war hero, an intelligent political man, and a great representation of the American dream. It is hard to believe that the same man who slaughtered thousands of Indian people and forced them out of their homeland received ample attention and admiration. This fame is because of his military…
