Same-Sex Marriage

Marriage which is also known as matrimony is defined as a religious and legal commitment between a man and woman. It is also a kind of expression of love. Marriage is often formalized through a wedding ceremony. In some cultures, marriage is important and compulsory before pursuing any sexual activity. Most of the time, marriage is between different genders of people such as between a man and woman. However, homosexual relationships are increasingly gaining acceptance in certain countries like United States of America. Though not everyone can accept the fact of homosexual relationships, but President Obama has made a statement that he supports same-sex marriage in public during a pre-election debate in Washington. He received plentiful of reactions and comments which are either agreements or disagreements on the statement he made. Well, there are some states in America which legalised same-sex marriage. Here I would like to share my response regarding this news. Let’s talk about some reasons that I agreed with same-sex marriage. First of all, I truly believe in God. In my opinion, everyone is equal and all of us will have a special one to be with for the rest of our lives which is our soul mates. The only different thing between a normal marriage and same-sex marriage is the gender. Basically, if a man and woman marry then we will see it as a normal and healthy marriage. But somehow we will see marriage between a gay couple and a lesbian couple as a shame or a sin. This is how normally everyone’s perception is on same-sex marriage. I think that same-sex marriage should be legalised and accepted by everyone because God will accept the way they are. Homosexual couples are just like us, ordinary people so God will love them the same way God loves us. Besides that, they did not do any crimes and that’s why same-sex marriage is not a sin. They deserved to be the way they are and we should not judge them. Secondly, the most important thing in marriage is love. If homosexual couples are truly in love with each other then why should we separate them apart just because of the gender factor? Even heterosexual marriage could not last forever. Based on the statistics done by the Americans for Divorce Reform, it is reported that the divorce rate in America is 50%. Furthermore, a marriage is a relationship between two people. It is a personal matter between the two people and should not be anyone else’s business. There might be disapproval from families and friends but this doesn’t mean that we can stop them as it is not our rights. It is really unnecessary for society to stop and against them and to tell what two people can or can’t do even though no one is hurt during the process. In the end of the day, we will be just named as busybodies. One more reason that I support same-sex marriage is the number of child adoptions will increase since the homosexual couples cannot reproduce. An increase in the number of child adoptions is indeed a good thing. Well, as there are more children being adopted then definitely there will be lesser baby dumping issues in the country. Alike any heterosexual couples, a same-sex marriage may also have desire to have their own family. Since homosexual couples cannot have their kids naturally, they will have to go for another option which is to adopt children. People think that same-sex marriage may erode family values but this is not true. The major social issue concerned in our society is STD (Sexually Transmitted Disease) which resulted from frequent, unprotected sex with many partners. Marriage encourages people to settle down and give up that kind of lifestyle. So, what is the benefit if we object same-sex marriage? I would like to make a point that more marriages mean lesser social issues. When there are lesser social issues, the country will be a better place. Now, I will share my disagreements on same-sex marriage. One of them is the homosexual lifestyle is not something so good to be encouraged. There are many researches on homosexual lifestyle. Recent studies show that homosexuals have a greater risk of suffering from psychological disorders than the heterosexuals. It is reported that there are higher rates of suicide, depression, bulimia, antisocial personality disorder and substance abuse among homosexuals. In years’ time, there will also be a decrease in human population in the world. Other than that, another research has shown that the life expectancy for homosexuals is about 20 years shorter than others. A study has found that children grow best when reared in a home with a married mother and father. This is because children have needs and requirements from parents of opposite gender. I do not conclude that a homosexual couple cannot bring up a child but it is just not the ideal one. Next, the role of marriage in society is one of the topics taught in public schools. If same-sex marriage is legalised, school teachers will have to teach children that same-sex marriage is equivalent to opposite-sex marriage. This will cause opposition from some parents who are religiously conservative. Even I, myself feel that it does not seem right to teach children about the equality between same-sex marriage and opposite-sex marriage. In addition, same-sex marriage will confuse children about gender roles. Since young, we have already known that women have the responsibility to give birth while men are responsible to raise and take care of the family. Due to same-sex marriage where both of them cannot have kids naturally, children might get confused. In our thoughts, children are innocent and the truth about same-sex marriage is kind of not suitable for them to know. In conclusion, I am likely agreed with same-sex marriage though there are a few of disagreements. Different people will have their different opinions. So, this response that I have written is basically my point of view. Either anyone or I have the rights to against homosexual couples. They are just human like us but maybe a little different. God creates and accepts us the way we are. Instead of fighting against this issue, I personally feel that it is better for us to learn how to accept other people. Anyway, the same-sex marriage issue is after all a tiny thing when compared to natural disasters such as Tsunami. There is no need to argue over a minor issue when there are other major problems to be solved. In this way, the country will be more peaceful. Let’s work together to achieve world peace.
