Should gay marriage be legalized?

In many countries around the world there have been several discussions about this issue. The controversy is to approve or disapprove a law that will let people of the same sex get married. Many countries such as: Netherlands, Belgium, Spain, Canada, South Africa, Norway, Sweden, Portugal, Iceland and Argentina have allowed this new movement and also have agreed that couples conformed by two people of the same sex can adopt children. Many people think that gay marriage is not incorrect because all everyone has the right to be happy and this means to be free and equal, also because laws should be for everyone and it should not matter if someone is gay or not. However, others do not agree with this perspective for several reasons. Only ten countries in the world contemplate gay marriage. In addition, countries in which this movement is contemplated have regulations like assisted fertilization and open filiation regime, which pose an additional controversy. This essay will argue that legalizing gay marriage is not encouragable because it does not follow the traditional rules of marriage, provoking children to suffer both psychilogically and physically. And last but not least, same-sex marriage is very dangerous and harzadous for homosexuals’ health.
Gay marriage “weaken the traditional family values essential to our society (Messerli).” Traditionally the institution of marriage is composed by man and woman, which nowadays is constantly breaking down due to same-sex marriage. That is why most religions consider homosexuality as something morally wrong. This controversial issue of homosexuals getting married goes against the traditional values by which our society is been hold for several years, and they are usually passed down on from one generation to another. Some of these values such as love, respect, family time are very important because they give children the base in which to work and make progress. But unfortunately, these values can not be passed on throughtout generations due to the lack of oppsite sex parenting. Therefore, legalizing gay and lesbian marriage would only ‘‘shift the purpose of marriage from procreating and raising children to adult gratification. (ProCon.org)’’
Legalizing same-sex marriage would have serious psychological and sexually impact on children. Same-sex parenting might not be able to guide children about masculinity and femininity, ‘‘and the complementary interaction of these qualities unable them to grow up with a healthy and balanced view of life and relationships. (Fischer)’’ According to Family Research Institute website, “ a randomly drawn sample found 17 out of 31 who reported a homosexual parent. These 17 were more likely to report sex with a parent, to engage in homosexuality for their first sexual encounter, to be sexually molested, to become homosexual, and to report dissatisfaction with their childhood. (Getting the Facts: Same-Sex Marriage)” This means that children will not be able to assimilate how to relate to both genders later in life by not relating to both mother and father and observing the way in which they relate to each other. Therefore, allowing same-sex marriage to take place will cause sexual confusion and it will provoke chidren the desire to have sexual experimentation among diverse youth.

Same-sex marrige should not be legalized because it is dangerous for the conmunity’s health and children’s well-being. Nowadays, many homosexuals risks their lives because of the unhygenic sex practices that they have with their partners. As a result of those actions, the possibility of getting AIDS and other sexually transmitted diseases (STDs) are very high-ranking. ‘‘Studies of MSM ( men who have sex with men) treated in STD clinics show rates of infection as high as 36 percent in major cities of The United States of America. A CDC study (Centers for Disease Control and Prevention) attributed the high infection rate to having high numbers of anonymous sex partners: Syphilis, gonorrhea, and chlamydia apparently have been introduced into a population of MSM who have large numbers of anonymous partners, which can result in rapid and extensive transmission of STDs. (HIV/AIDS)’’ Those diseases can be treated but others cannot be treated . In conclusion, homosexual marriages have brought many problems to our society and should not be legalized. Marriage was established for man and woman, so they can get together and form a family of their own. Also children growing up with homosexual parents are more likely to suffer psychologically and physically due to the confusion of gender roles. As shown in studies described above, same-sex marriage would increase the risk of people contracting diseases that are hazardous for one’s health. Therefore, gay and lesbian lifestyle is not something to be encouraged in any society around the world.
