Image finding that one person that you love so much that you want to spend the rest of your life with. You want to become joined together in marriage, to articulate your love, to share everything in both of your lives, and stay together till death do you apart. According to the government of Illinois, as well as 42 other states, you are barred from doing so. In present day, 2012, 7 US states currently allow same-sex marriages.
Let us first take a look at the definition of marriage. The definition itself has changed quite a bit over time from biblical historical days. It is time to allow all couples regardless of sex to enjoy equal protections, rights and benefits under the law. The reality is that the definition of marriage being something between a man and women is discriminatory, and is out of touch with the way relationships are conducted in today’s society. Therefore, instead of having civil union, same sex marriage needs to be legalized in the state of Illinois. In the city of Chicago, Illinois alone, there are an estimated 288,478 LGBT members of the population. With demographical numbers like, it is quite obvious that LGBT individuals represent a significant amount of our population. According to the first amendment, the bible has no standing in American law. Yet time and time again, politicians use it as a political weapon to determine their morals. If anything should be illegal, it is this. In my opinion, being opposed to same-sex marriage is just another form of prejudice that is still being withheld. This argument is essentially the same as the one half a century ago when it was thought to be almost inconceivable for an African American to share the same water fountain, and ride next to you on a bus.
