Sammy's Queenie: Summary
By the end of the story Sammy appears as a winner in my eyes. I feel, Sammy realized his future was not there at the A&P. Sammy has very dismissive thoughts towards his co-worker, his supervisor, and most of the customers in the store as if he is superior or more enlightened than them. Despite Sammy’s sense of superiority towards the people in the store he cannot help but feel, in the eyes of Queenie, he is just like everyone else in the store. Sammy felt compelled to set himself apart from “the sheep”. By announcing “I quite” loud enough for the girls and Queenie to hear, he is taking a stand and proving he is different. By quitting his job, Sammy in a sense is imagining himself in the same words as Queenie. In Sammy eyes, Queenie is sophisticated,

    Sammy meets the need of one’s standards that may be classified as a normal and average teenage boy. He works, is easily distracted, and has a keen interest in girls.     When the girls walk in Sammy attention was quickly caught by the females and their different choice of clothing. The females are dressed in bathing suits but the beach was 10 miles outside of the town that they lived in. Sammy says it was their act of non-conformity that drew his attention.
