Have you ever noticed that your mood tends to change with the seasons throughout the course of the year? In John Greenleaf Whittier’s “A Dream of Summer”, this very question has been shown to be true. From what I understand, “He loved nature, and was a strong believer that God controlled the extreme climates and temperatures in certain places on Planet Earth.” Mr. Whittier was also a Quaker, who like most Quakers placed an emphasis on a simple, happy life. In this poem we see how strongly he feels as if he is cold, barren, and lifeless if you will, in the winter. Yet as spring comes into play, he is awakened…

"Summer was dead, but autumn had not yet been born the last graveyard flowers were blooming and the smell of them reminded us of the dead" (315). The author conveys death to us by stating the end of summer, and the beginning of autumn which brings sadness and death to living things which are words picked out to create a relation to death. The author also plays with our emotion by The choice of the words, graveyard and fall, which are seasons And things that commune to the passing and change of time which ultimately brings…

The poem begins by undercutting the beautiful, pleasant imagery promised by the title through the terse bluntness of the “dusk, and cold.” Flowers are indeed present as the title suggests, but only “frail, melancholy” ones, gathered by the subservient act of “kneeling” among “ashes and loam”. There is a definite sense of ending – both of the day, and of something grander. The persona’s attempts at engaging with the natural world are crudely rebuffed – she cannot succeed in her musical engagement, merely “try”, which results only in an “indifferent” blackbird “fret[ting] and strop[ing]” under “Ambiguous light. Ambiguous sky.” This unfriendly environment in which the poem begins foregrounds the sense of loss which characterises so much of Harwood’s poetry, an inevitable, confronting finality emphasised by the bluntness of the language and plethora of full stops. The adult world presented here is one of uncertainty, difficulty and ambiguity.…

(Jackson)” Like any other normal summer day, the sun was at its highest point in the sky and flowers bloomed like cherry blossoms. The set tone seems peaceful and normal. The tone creates a jolly and exciting day to look forward to for the people and children in the village. ”The children assembled first, of course. School was recently over for the summer, and the feeling of liberty sat uneasily on most of them.” The children were free of school because they recently got out of school for the summer break.…

Part Two begins with the changing of the seasons. From Christmas -to the bright spring and summer days- then back to the harsh winter. At the end of the years the knights help in sending Gawain on his quest to seek the Green Chapel where the Green Knight will await. The seasonal imagery sets a tone of mutability and unstableness for the rest of the poem. This is essential because Gawain is quickly called upon thereafter to demonstrate steadfastness in a world that is designed to change and be changed by the cycles of life and death.…

These four season are what their lives revolved around. In spring, the earth softened, warmed, and fertile dirt was ready to receive seeds. In the summer, berries became available during the extremely long stretches of dry and hot weather. In autumn, trees foliage changed to beautiful colors including red, yellow, and orange. Air was a bit more chilled and windy during this season. In the winter, snow fell over the land, freezing the lakes. The cycle of the seasons was clearly defined (Bial, 1999).…

The factors that lead to the "collapse" of civilizations are almost directly related to those that created it. Archaeologists characterize collapse by a number of elements, some of which we have evidence for, others we do not. Most archaeologists are unsure of exactly what caused the decline of most civilizations in the ancient world, yet there are many clues to some of the events that could have contributed. The collapse of the ancient Roman Empire, the Mesoamerican Mayan, and the Egyptian cultures will be discussed in the following paragraphs, with a focus on the uniqueness of each.…
