Sample Letter: Non-Profit Volunteer Organization
November 15, 2004

Dear (general),

I am writing to you because I have just discovered a wonderful opportunity for an overseas experience that is bound to change my life. Cross-Cultural Solutions, a non-profit volunteer organization, offers a program that places volunteers in countries such as India, Ghana, Costa Rica, Brazil, Guatemala, Tanzania, Russia, China, Thailand, and Peru for a variety of community development projects. Cross-Cultural Solutions' mission is to operate volunteer programs around the world in partnership with sustainable community initiatives, bringing people together to work side-by-side while sharing perspectives and fostering cultural understanding. My placement will focus on children, who are an integral part of all societies around the world and providing adequate care for them is becoming an important part of everyday life. I will have the opportunity to teach, learn from, and care for children in an entire community. In addition to the services I can provide in child care my knowledge will enable me to speak on the importance of immunization programs, HIV/AIDS awareness, women's empowerment, etc. in Costa Rica when I return.

It goes without saying that Peace Corps Volunteers see the world: from the Caribbean Islands to Central America, Eastern Europe, Africa and Asia, too. Salvation Army Poverty

Poverty on a global scale is significantly different than on a local scale. The underlying causes for poverty differs from country to country. This is why the Salvation Army’s method towards helping alleviate the pain from poverty is different for each country, although there are common themes. Operating in 126 countries, the Salvation Army, through numerous community based programs, tries to help stymie the effects of poverty on the communities they are stationed in. One such effect of poverty is the state of health care in the countries. The organization, according to Mrs. Baker, believes its practices are most effective and sustainable when they involve the community they are working with in some way. The organization has 183 health programmes in 39 countries, focusing on healthcare and the prevention of infectious diseases. The organization has, with the help of the locals, created 23 general hospitals and more than 150 clinics and health posts. A significant number of these healthcare facilities are equipped to treat HIV and AIDS. The organization stresses the fact that these…

Countless times I wished to be face to face with the child or group I was indirectly supporting through monetary donations or through volunteer work and somehow provide them with more than just a temporary solution to their lifelong dilemma. I believe that the only true solution is to educate and provide them the means of which to construct a maintainable lifestyle without the constant support of others. In a perfect world, organizations such as American Red cross, Unicef, the Salvation Army, and every other organization that relies on donations would not exist and we’d simply live a life in which we primarily depend on ourselves. Simply because something seems unattainable or beyond our grasp doesn't mean we shouldn’t at least strive for it and that is exactly what my continued volunteer work will aim to do: work towards a perfect world. This idea reminds me of a commonly used expression by Norman Vincent Peal: “Shoot for the moon. Even if you miss, you'll land among the…

Sorry to hear that this story was hard for you to read, however, I do admire your transparency in regards to your feelings. I agree with you people should not have been treated so terribly because of the color of their skin, I reason that it will be a tough fight to eradicate racism in this country being that this country was founded and built off of slavery. I have volunteered at a local hospital since my sophomore year of high school. I received a wide range of opportunities, from meeting family members at different areas of the hospital, to volunteering in the emergency room, to also giving comfort to families in the hospice. In addition, I am very culturally oriented and try to be active in the Indian community. Every summer, I volunteer at an Indian Saturday school which I have attended since kindergarten. I teach students the Indian customs and Hindu religion, as well as how to further their reading and writing skills in Sanskrit. I was responsible for these children for a whole week, and took care of them as if they were my siblings. I spend my free time teaching kids how to do Indian classical dance. I love being active and able to give back to my community as much as I can, and I would love to broaden my experience throughout the…

As a part of community service program organized by my high school, I together with my other three friends had the opportunity to visit a women’s shelter home. Our task was to make the women in the shelter home aware primary health care. The program required us to teach the women about basic health and hygiene related topics like cleanliness, food and nutrition, and safe motherhood. We visited the women’s shelter home called “SAATHI” (meaning “friend”). Though I had been to orphanages before with my family and friends, it was my first visit to the women’s shelter home, so I did not have any idea about the likely situation there. We were quite eager to visit the home, so we set the date and time of the visit between us. The day finally arrived. We reached the place where the shelter home was located.…

Last February 29, we had a chance to visit Hospicio de San Jose and made some community service. At first, I really thought that it would just be the same feeling I felt before when I was still a Rotaractor in the district of Manila but it is indeed different, the experience is priceless. The whole experience was so heart-warming and from that experience I’ve learned a lot. First, you can feel the Christmas spirit anytime of the year even if it is not yet on season. Having a community service there with some of the kids is like celebrating Christmas emphasizing the joy of loving and giving. The Christmas is in my heart; the nursing of those little kids, the playing with them, and the giving of gifts to them are just some of the affirmation of the true spirit of Christmas I felt while doing the service. Second, all that we have is indeed a great gift from our Loving Father. Through this activity, I’ve come to realized how lucky we are to have our loving parents with us in our lives. The kids made me more love my parents and appreciate every single thing they’re doing for us, their children. Third, these kids are not sinister instead they are so lucky. They are lucky for they have been saved from experiencing a more hurtful one and are now being taken cared of those people who are all so warm and caring. They are lucky for they have bunch of sisters and brothers who will heed them every time they needed them the most and unlike their parents, will never leave their side. Fourth, the true essence of love. Even if we just had a short time bonding with them, I had learned the true essence of love. That you can give your love even to those who you just met and make friends with. And that love is the best thing you can give to someone unconditionally. It is the greatest gift you can share with especially to those who is in need of it. Lastly, I’ve learned how intelligent God is that everything he makes is made for a special purpose.…

The three months that I spent volunteering in Cambodia undoubtedly contain the most valuable moments of my lifetime. I spent the majority of my time teaching English to primary students, doing renovations on various schools, and occasionally doing work at families homes. The children that I taught are unquestionably the most eager students that Ive ever met. Its incredibly exciting and rewarding being able to teach students who are enthusiastic about learning. Not only are they great to teach, but they are also unbelievably enjoyable to be around. With beautiful smiles plastered to their faces, they were always grabbing on to me, and despite their unfortunate circumstances they are the happiest children Ive ever met. One aspect that I loved about the program was our living situation. Instead of staying in a hostel or hotel, we lived in a home in a local village. Although we had certain amenities that the majority of our neighbors did not, we were immediately immersed in the culture. The staff at GSO are absolutely amazing and teach you so much about Cambodian culture. I became great friends with all of them and give them a lot of credit for my great experience. The most rewarding experience of my life blossomed from the love that I invested in my classroom day after day, and unexpectedly the good that I did for my underprivileged students nurtured important concepts into my own life. Love cultivated with each broken smile, every whole-hearted laugh, and the unforeseen generosity I witnessed on a daily basis. I learned the ins and outs of compassion and was enlightened about the potency of simple acts of kindness. Best of all I received an indispensable supply of gratitude for the unseen beauties of my privileged life. The only regret that I had when leaving was that I hadnt stayed longer.…

It was Saturday morning and everyone was so excited about the outreach activity. As we gathered, everybody went to their selected jeepneys as we go to our destination. I was very excited as I stepped down the jeep with all the things that we needed for the activity. We need to cross at the bridge for us to go to loob, Gainza . I was very afraid as I stepped on the bridge. It feels like I’m going to fall into the water, but I still try to overcome my fear. As we go by, there are tricycle that’s waiting for us. I saw children who are taking a bath, maybe because there are too excited about the activities at the same time for the feeding program. Finally, we already arrived at our destination. I’m so overwhelmed because the people there are so generous. They help us carry out those things that we bought for the activities. We went to our place to prepare the food for the children. I saw several children sitting on the branches. I feel pity on them because they are too thin; in short some of them are malnourished. Our tribe prepared the ingredients for macaroni soup. Some of us chopped all the ingredients that need to be cut and some of us prepared the material to be used in cooking. It’s kind an awkward because don’t know where to start and how to approach them, but I still try my best. As I look for the other tribes to take some pictures, there are a lot of children almost a hundred pluses and above and I was shocked. I take pictures of them, I feel so happy every time I saw children who are smiling. There are very kind because they keep on participating and listening to their kuya’s and ate’s. I really love kids, so I also help the tutorial committee. I teach them on how to read and write, and there I realized that some of them don’t really know how to write and read. It’s not that easy to manipulate or control those kids for some of them are 5 years old below. Some are naughty and some of them are like they are just out of this world. I also saw those parents whose…
